Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:
You only have to look at the "Phew what a scorcher" headlines to know that it's the so-called "silly season" (or it may have something to do with the weather), but two news stories on the site in the past week have really left me scratching my head.
First comes the prediction from US market research by Design Chain Associates (see www.electronicstalk.com/news/dsi/dsi100.html) that component shortages could be on the horizon. And while it is easy to appreciate that bringing a wafer fab online is not exactly as easy as turning on a tap, surely it is not unreasonable to expect the semiconductor industry to have got its respective houses in sufficient order to be able to profit from an increase in demand by increasing its output.
But if that was not enough to set off the déjà vu alarm, then the news that Aeroflex has acquired the Racal Wireless Solutions Group sent me spinning right back in time.
My memory fails me as to whether it was 1989 or 1990, but in an embargoed briefing the MD of what was then Marconi Instruments proudly boasted that he was on the verge of buying Racal Instruments, thereby creating a giant of the UK test and measurement industry. The deal, of course, fell through before the appointed date, and so the news never got out.
So now we have dual ironies: Marconi Instruments (like so many of its then stable mates) is no more, bought out by IFR Systems, which itself was acquired by Aeroflex; Racal Instruments, on the other hand, still exists. The UK, it seems, has finally got its big name in test and measurement, but it's an American one.
I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.
Alternatively, the full stories behind all the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below.
In the meantime, if you have any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best wishes

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. Digital modulator IP core aims to set standards
Cambridge-based Commsonic has developed a new core in its range of "costimisable" IP that is targeted at the latest generations of low-cost, DSP-oriented FPGA devices. The IP cores are crafted to allow developers to trade off feature set and performance against FPGA resource utilisation and thereby component cost and power consumption. The new core, the CMS0009, is a digital modulator that is compliant with the COFDM DVB-T standard and aimed at applications such as digital closed-circuit TV, mobile video and test equipment.

2. Voltage references claim new standards
Xicor reckons the performance of its new X60008CIS8-50 and X60008DIS8-50 5V reference devices eclipses many of the most accurate devices currently available. The devices offer a guaranteed absolute initial accuracy as low as +/-0.5mV, straight-line temperature coefficients as tight as 5ppm/C, and a long-term stability of 10ppm/kh while consuming a mere 500nA of supply current. Both devices feature a noise voltage figure of 30uV peak-peak (0.1 to 10Hz), a sink/source current of 10mA, and an operating temperature range of -40 to +85C.

3. Software-based MIDI solution cuts handset hardware
TTPCom has developed a software-based MIDI solution for mobile devices requiring advanced 'polyphonic' sound capabilities. This software solution eliminates the need for separate MIDI hardware, therefore saving approximately GBP 2 from the bill of materials (BoM), reducing manufacturing and inventory costs and saving valuable space on the phone's PCB.

ACC Aquasafe Super and Aquasafe RTU are powerful cleaners designed to remove unwanted residues from many different substrates. Ideal for use in the electronics industry, these products quickly and easily remove flux residues from soldering processes, and fingerprints from manual handling of PCBs after repair. Additionally, residues such as grease, oil and mould release agents that may often be present from the forming and pressing of the components during manufacture are easily removed.
