Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:
This week has seen another raft of semiconductor companies announcing quarterly and/or annual financial results. And the weight of evidence towards an electronics industry-wide recovery is growing. (Hands up all those of you who didn't follow my tip to invest in the NEC Electronics IPO - me included!)
The pick of the crop, though, must be Scottish success story Wolfson Microelectronics, which managed a 100% increase in turnover over the last year, showing the benefits of picking a buoyant niche market and exploiting it for all its worth.
It is also particularly interesting to see a canny old campaigner like Intersil taking tough decisions it feels will ensure its future profitability. Many companies over the years have seen their profitable niche markets turn into commodity battlegrounds. Intersil, it seems, has decided that the best way to continue to profit from the wireless networking market it pioneered is to get out of it while it still has intellectual property to sell.
Finally, as a footnote to a story from Electronicstalk Newsletter 59, it seems that all the anti-GSM campaigning by US Congressman Darrell Issa may have been to no avail.
Issa, you may remember, railed against the GSM system as "a French invention" and inferior to CDMAOne (as supported by his campaign sponsor Qualcomm) in calling for US companies to grab the lion's share of the work in reconstructing Iraq's infrastructure.
Fortunately, it would appear that his appeals have fallen on deaf ears, and enterprising Bahrain-based GSM operator Batelco has spent about $5 million in the past month installing GSM basestations and other equipment in Baghdad, which are tied into the outside world via satellite terminals.
No service for Congressman Issa there, then - and none in Kabul either, which has just welcomed another new GSM network to help out the creaking Afghan fixed telecomms system.
I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.
Alternatively, the full stories behind all the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below.
In the meantime, if you have any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best wishes
