Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:

As one who was brought up on the writings of Ian Flemming and the Bond films inspired by his novels, I find the whole business of electronic devices in espionage a fascinating area.

So I am indebted to Electronicstalk reader Brian Grimshaw who has drawn my attention to the story of the Great Seal Bug - a piece of technology that was phenomenally advanced for its day.

The "bug" in question was a passive listening device that was secreted in a wooden replica of the Great Seal of the United States that was presented by Soviet schoolchildren to US Ambassador Averell Harriman in 1946. Not surprisingly, the Ambassador hung the replica in his office. What really was surprising was that the bug was not discovered until 1952.

The trick, of course, was that it was a passive device. It required no power to operate it and contained no electronic circuitry. In stead, the eavesdropper aimed a radio beam at the antenna from a source outside the building.

In operation, any sound that struck the diaphragm of the bug caused variations in the amount of space (and the capacitance) between it and a tuning post plate. These variations altered the charge on the antenna, creating modulations in the reflected radio beam. These were picked up and interpreted by the receiver.

The full story and a diagram of innovative technology can be found at www.spybusters.com/Great_Seal_Bug.html. And as Brian points out in his e-mail to me: "It makes you wonder if that was 1946, what have they got today?".

I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.

Alternatively, the full stories behind all the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below.

In the meantime, if you have any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.

Best wishes

2. Two blades are better than one for cooling

JMC Products has developed a novel counter-rotating, dual-blade fan design. The dual-impeller, dual-motor fan is engineered with redundancy to protect against fan failure and to produce effective airflow performance against high system pressures. JMC's counter-rotating fans are a new model size for the thermal cooling industry, measuring a compact 40 x 50 x 32 and 40 x 50 x 38mm, allowing design engineers to realise the benefits of improved air performance in a 1U solution.

4. DiskOnChip doubles Flash storage density

M-Systems has released the 1Gbit Mobile DiskOnChip G3, its second multilevel cell (MLC) NAND-based product. Storing two bits of information in a single cell, and complimenting the 512Mbit Mobile DiskOnChip G3 announced earlier this year, the new 1Gbit (128Mbyte) model, at only 9 x 12mm, takes the lead as the world's smallest high-capacity NAND-based storage solution. Like the 512Mbit model, the 1Gbit Mobile DiskOnChip G3 implements M-Systems' x2 technology, optimising reliability, performance and power consumption.
