Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:

The list of uses for mobile handsets continues to grow with this week's news that Korean mobile operator SK Telecom is providing its customers with a sound file designed to repel mosquitoes.

Now, I'm no entomologist, but I would hope that the sound, which mimics the buzz of a male mosquito to repel the bloodthirsty female of the species, is not specific to Korean mosquitoes. Otherwise there must be an opportunity for translating the buzz into other mosquito languages.

But why stop there? Here, surely, is a handset application to which nobody can object. There could be a whole range of international variations. Scots would want a version to repel midges, US residents could play a tone to repel rattlesnakes, and Australians could play a whole orchestra of sounds to repel half the country's indigenous fauna - no doubt spawning demand for extra-large battery packs.

Seriously though (and I speak as one whose flesh is regarded as a gourmet treat for all manner of biting insects), bug control is one area where there has been very little progress in recent years. And with insect-borne diseases ranging from malaria to Ross River fever on the increase, any initiative is welcome.

Surely electrotechnology has more to offer the world of insect control than the common bug "zapper". Electronicstalk would welcome news from any readers active in the field.

I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.

Alternatively, the full stories behind all the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below.

In the meantime, if you have any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.

Best wishes

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. New DRAM technology boosts throughput eightfold

Rambus, Toshiba and Elpida have jointly revealed the specifications of their XDR DRAM. XDR DRAM uses Rambus' XDR memory interface technology, formerly codenamed Yellowstone. Running at 3.2GHz, XDR DRAM offers eight times the bandwidth of today's best-in-class PC memory. The XDR DRAM family has been designed to offer mainstream memory solutions for a broad range of applications. XDR DRAM can provide the cost benefits of mainstream memory while still outperforming low-volume speciality DRAMs.

2. Free evaluation for driver toolkit

Cypress Semiconductor has added an evaluation version of Jungo's new WinDriver development tool to its EZ-USB, EZ-USB FX and EZ-USB FX2 peripheral controller development kits. WinDriver is a wizard-based tool that makes it simple for manufacturers designing products with Cypress's EZ-USB family of peripheral controllers to add Windows, Linux and Windows CE.NET drivers support to their products. WinDriver is the only crossplatform tool enabling USB driver development for desktop and embedded operating systems.

3. Reference design makes a PVR tuner in seven chips

Zarlink Semiconductor has unveiled a production-ready blueprint for a complete tuner subsystem used in a digital cable PVR. Based on seven of Zarlink's proven RF (radio frequency) chips, the ZLTE10565 reference design is the first in a family of off-the-shelf designs that meets the growing need for higher-quality tuners in advanced digital TV products. PVRs, also known as digital video recorders, receive and store to hard drive two or more TV channels for "watch and record" and "pause and resume" viewing.

7. Loss-free packaging enhances MOSFET performance

Philips has expanded the range of power MOSFETs offered in its innovative SOT669 loss-free package (LFPAK). Originally designed for use in DC/DC convertor applications, the new LFPAK devices are smaller, more efficient and optimised for a number of new applications including notebook computers, desktops and servers, as well as high-frequency applications. The small size blended with the superior thermal characteristics offers minimal power loss, to help manufacturers of space-constrained applications develop smaller, more efficient designs while reducing component count.

8. Gel mounts damp out road shocks

When trying to protect onboard computers in trucks and buses from road and engine vibrations, a soft isolation mount is often required. Gel-Mec now has a range of ultrasoft gel sandwich or stud mounts which are much softer than traditional rubber isolators. These mounts are made of a very soft, highly damped silicone gel bonded to metal.
