Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:
My editorial last week concerning the potential misuse of camera phones seems to have been timely, with companies and institutions queuing up to ban the use of such devices.
And - with a delicious twist of irony - the latest to join the club is no less than the world's third-largest handset manufacturer, Samsung Electronics. The Korean consumer electronics giant has banned the use of camera phones from some of its most sensitive factories, fearing that they could be used for industrial espionage.
Funnily enough, good old-fashioned cloak-and-dagger spying would be an ideal application for today's handsets. Indeed, until 15 years ago when there was still a thriving Cold War such electronic gizmos were the stuff of James Bond.
Still, in the words of more than one reader who cared enough to reply, in a few months we will have all "got over it", and people will be using their phones for their proper purpose.
I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.
Alternatively, the full stories behind all the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below.
In the meantime, if you have any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best wishes

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. Novel MOSFETs promise to boost DC/DC performance
A new range of power MOSFETs uses a breakthrough TrenchFET technology to combine greatly reduced switching losses with ultralow on-resistance. Reducing gate-drain capacitance by half while maintaining superb on-resistance performance, the new Vishay Siliconix WFET power MOSFETs offer the industry's best on-resistance times gate charge figure of merit: 60% lower than previous-generation devices. Lower on-resistance means that more power can be converted in less space, and lower gate-drain capacitance means more efficient switching at high frequencies.

2. Reference design for GSM/GPRS camera phones
Sharp Corporation and Texas Instruments are to combine their respective strengths to provide a reference design for GSM/GPRS camera phones, significantly cutting the necessary design time and resources required by manufacturers to introduce new camera handsets into market. The reference design will combine Sharp's 1Mpixel CCD camera module, Flash memory and LCD, together with TI's TCS2100 chipset for GSM/GPRS cellphones and OMAP-DM270 multimedia processor. The reference design will also support high-level video including Nancy Technology from Office NOA and MPEG-4 standards.

3. Electronic fuse protects 24V circuits
The all-new Weidmuller Waveguard provides industrial control and switching systems with fully reliable fault protection for switched-mode 24V DC power supplies; conventional automatic circuit breakers require too high a current to operate normally. As well as full, selective dynamic and static protection, the innovative Weidmuller Waveguard (patents applied for) offers many features to ensure its wide application potential.

4. Ferrites fit flat cables
A new range of ferrite EMI suppression cores is specifically designed for flat flex cables (FFCs) and IDC ribbon cables, giving designers more choice to optimise the core size and impedance for these types of cables. Slot widths ranging from 7 to over 40mm, and from 0.7mm in height, enable a snug fit over cables from eight to 64 ways. The new cores are available in a wide range of lengths, as well as solid or split formats that further extend choice and simplifies assembly.

5. Models ease transition to fixed-point DSP
RF Engines has developed a new set of fast Fourier transform (FFT) and polyphase DFT bit true models for use with Matlab system design software. One of the main concerns when moving from floating point DSP processing to a fixed point architecture in FPGAs, is making sure that the overall performance of the processing is not compromised by the fixed-bit-width designs available in the FPGA. In the Vectis pipelined FFT model, the designer has control over FFT size.

6. Tools verify PCI Express compliance
TransEDA has developed a PCI Express verification toolkit - a set of Verilog and C++ models that implement a variety of simulation-based environments for verifying that a design complies with the PCI Express revision 1.0a specification. The toolkit consists of a PCI Express version 1.0a compliant bus functional model (BFM), an integrated protocol checker, symbol and packet trackers, and a highly configurable test bench that demonstrates how to use the tools and also provides a template for quick integration with an existing simulation environment.

7. New tool brings complex mixed-signal SoCs together
ICassemble offers top-down floorplanning, advanced interactive and automatic routing, and chip assembly capabilities within the Mentor Graphics IC Station full-custom layout environment. ICassemble is built into the IC Station tool - with a common database and integrated user interface - allowing SoC designers to plan, implement and connect blocks within a physical layout environment, eliminating the need for time-consuming and error-prone data abstractions and conversions.

8. Multifunction switch aids menu-based control
The PLSJ-1 is a side-actuated surface-mount switch designed to enable "scrolling" on menu driven systems with a "push to select" action to activate the desired function. In response to market demands for handheld products the PLSJ-1 is designed to mount on the edge of a PCB as part of an overall ergonomic design. Secure mounting is ensured by two retention pegs.

9. Ambient light sensor saves backlight power
The HSDL-9000 ambient light photosensor detects the amount of light at any given time and sends a signal to adjust the backlighting as necessary in a mobile screen or keypad. When there is sufficient ambient light, the backlighting is not turned on, thereby extending battery life in mobile electronic devices such as mobile phones, PDAs and laptop computers. Agilent's new device outperforms silicon photodiode light detection solutions because its spectral response peaks at the same frequency (550nm) as the human eye.

10. PCI acquisition cards take DSP onboard
The CH Series of PCIbus data acquisition boards combines multi-input data acquisition with built-in memory and a dedicated processor for high-speed accuracy and precision at a new groundbreaking price point for the industry. Using a local digital signal processor, 16Mbyte of onboard memory, and PCIbus mastering, the new CH Series is able to provide glitch-free capture and/or playback of analogue signals of a length limited only by host RAM size, even with a non-real-time PC operating system.
