Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:
Over the years the electronics industry has spawned many different debates about the ethics of technology in the popular press. This is hardly surprising in an industry that over the years has owed much of its R&D funding to military sources.
But, whatever the development, it seems somebody will think up an application that crosses the accepted bounds of behaviour. (Or so the popular press would have us believe.)
The latest candidate for misuse is of course the cellular handset, or more to the point the current generation of handsets with integral cameras and sufficient storage to record short video clips.
Clearly, in the wrong hands, such devices have great potential for mischief. But it is particularly interesting to note the international "trends of misuse". For while the initial reaction in the UK was to ban the use of such devices in sports changing rooms and the like, we now hear that in Japan, the trend is to take your handset to a bookshop to pirate the latest works of fiction.
In each case, the popular press has seized on the trend, and generated outrage from the general public - at potential voyeurism on the one hand and copyright theft on the other. Yet it is only the ready availability of the technology that has brought the problems to the fore.
Lets face it, as electronics engineers, the vast majority of people reading this column would certainly have the wherewithal to source all the component parts required to create a far more discrete system capable of performing exactly the same roles - and considerably less obtrusively than having to wave a handset around. (Indeed, a really determined voyeur or pirate could have built such a system some years ago.)
Many would describe the view of the press in such matters as "Victorian", which would be ironic given the great leaps made during that era. One wonders how certain other developments might have been greeted by today's sensationalist media. Headlines such as "Bell invents telephone - obscene calls to follow" come immediately to mind.
I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.
