Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:
So it would appear that there really is a venue in the UK capable of hosting a successful national electronics manufacturing exhibition.
And now the city that once gave to the nation such diverse things as a taste for sea bathing, the world's first electric railway, Lord Olivier, Fat Boy Slim and the Editor of Electronicstalk once again has an annual electronics show with the news that Nepcon is to forsake its previous home at the NEC and firmly re-establish its roots in Brighton.
The move, which follows the success of this month's Nepcon Brighton event is a remarkable about-face. But so successful was the recent event that Reed Exhibitions has taken the bold step to move next year's event from the National Exhibition Centre back to the South Coast.
The show began in Brighton in the 1970s, but was moved to Birmingham during the late 1980s due to the shortage of space. Indeed, for a couple of years the UK had two Nepcons, with components on show during the Autumn in Brighton and production equipment in Birmingham during the spring.
However, economics dictated that national shows should be held in a national exhibition centre, centrally situated and with its own international airport. After 1987 Nepcon Brighton was no more… until now.
Now, it seems that small is beautiful again. Or, more to the point, people perhaps appreciate that if they're going to be forced away from home to run or visit an exhibition then it might as well be somewhere they enjoy going!
Perhaps as a Brightonian I am biased. But it is no coincidence that in other countries (with the possible exception of Germany) major trade shows and conferences are generally held in centres of tourism. Faced with growing competition from online media, exhibitions and conferences can only gain from such venues. Indeed, I have personally enjoyed visiting events at locations such as Nice, Las Vegas and San Francisco.
And if Brighton is good enough for the British Labour and Conservative parties - not to mention the TUC - then it's certainly good enough for the electronics industry.
I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. MOSFET temperature compensation is a sound idea
A new class of MOSFETs with built-in temperature compensation for enhanced audio performance has been developed by Sanken Electric in conjunction with the Pioneer Corp. Known as LEXAM (legend of excellent audio MOSFET), the new range not only offers highly accurate and responsive temperature compensation through the use of an on-chip diode: the devices also feature built-in push/pull circuitry that eliminates the need to trim the idling current in audio amplifiers using external components.

2. Four-channel serial board uses software selection
The C4-104.Ultra is the first multi-interface PC/104 serial I/O card that allows the user to select the desired interface via software. RS232, RS422 or RS485 modes may be selected independently for each of the four ports, eliminating the need for setting jumpers or DIP-switches on the board. Designed to meet the core needs of PC/104 applications requiring high reliability, small size, and long term availability, the C4-104.Ultra is available in both standard and extended temperature range models (-40 to +80C).

3. Convertors pack more power into smaller spaces
A new series of 12V-input point-of-load DC/DC convertors offers state-of-the-art performance to support leading-edge product designs. With efficiencies to 94%, power densities to 15W/cm3, and typical heights of 8.2mm, these nonisolated convertors support developers seeking to pack more functionality into smaller real estate. The new E-class nonisolated point of load (niPOL) DC/DC convertors are available with 5, 10 or 15A outputs, and have no minimum load requirement.

4. More security for SCA2 interconnects
The LokDown SCA2 receptacle was developed in response to the industry's need for a more secure SCA2 interconnect system. Circuit Assembly took on the challenge and designed the solution to pull force and stress transfer challenges. The LokDown system provides mechanical fasteners integrated into the insulator to prevent lateral, vertical and rotational movement of the insulator, minimising the potential for the rocking action from high torque drive trays and racks. The mechanical location and retention of the SCA2 insulator also reduces the potential for receptacle misalignment.

5. Kits get started on latest DSP generation
Two new low-cost DSP starter kits (DSKs) aim to make digital signal processor system development faster and easier. Available now are the first low-cost DSK for the high-performance TMS320C64x fixed-point DSP generation, and a new high-precision DSK for the TMS320C67x floating-point generation. The new DSKs, codeveloped with Spectrum Digital and priced at $395 each, provide complete hardware and software platforms for the development of systems based on TI's TMS320C6000 DSPs, TI's highest-performing platform of DSP products.

6. Software optimises heatsink design
Qfin 3.0 is an easy-to-use tool for designing optimised heatsinks. According to Dr Jan Visser, President of Qfinsoft, "Qfin has been developed as a heatsink design and optimisation tool to cut the time and effort involved in designing optimised heatsinks". Along with a completely new design interface, a more advanced network solver that can solve multiple fans on the same heatsink, Qfin's accuracy over a wide range of complex heatsink geometries has been improved.

9. Desktop system rips through timing closure
Time Director is the first-ever product for the electronic design desktop to enable cost-effective rapid timing closure with performance that accelerates existing methods by a factor of 40 to 50x. InTime Software is the emerging leader in RTL timing analysis (RTA) technology for complex IC design. Time Director is an integral part of RTA, which accurately predicts the RTL-to-GDSII flow at a fraction of the cost and time of traditional implementation flows. Time Director moves static timing analysis to the front of the design process, operating at RTL rather than waiting for gates.
