Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:
Last week the Semiconductor Industry Association came out with news that anyone with any kind of stake in the industry will appreciate. Coming hot on the heels of terrorism- and SARs-hit figures for 2003, the association is predicting growth of between 16 and 17% for 2004, which should be good news for anyone who has been watching their investments nosedive over the past year.
Although predictions this far in advance can be fraught with danger, the SIA does have a reputation for being uncannily accurate. And, as we are continually told, there's nothing like talking up a recovery to create a recovery.
Interestingly, the news presaged an announcement today from NEC that it is to spin off shares in its semiconductor operations. And while the value of any investment has more to do with market confidence than any validity of technology, the new "independent" NEC Electronics (NEC will still hold 70%) certainly has the technologies to stand alone.
Mind you, I admit that I am the last person to lecture anyone about investing in electronics stocks, having missed out on massive rises in my own clients' shares during the 1990s! So while I won't be sinking my entire pension fund into anticipating resurgence in electronics stocks, perhaps a small flutter wouldn't go amiss - it's certainly safer than betting on horseracing.
I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.
Alternatively, the full stories behind all the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below.
In the meantime, if you have any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best wishes

2. Modular EMC test system uses IR link for safety
The new Modula range of mains interference EMC test equipment offers maximum functional safety and full compliance with relevant testing safety standards. The innovative Modula is the result of a ground-up rethink of test equipment functionality and offers greater ease of operation in laboratory and production test facilities than previously available. Full control of the system is available remotely by a wireless infra-red connected PDA. The modular concept behind this new range offers better value to end users than traditional test systems as individual test modules may be added to the system as required.

3. Controller puts SBCs to power-sensitive uses
The PowerNut simplifies the design of power sensitive applications by controlling the input power to a single board computer or other device. The PowerNut provides developers with voltage regulation, power on/off time scheduling and voltage monitoring features on a platform smaller than a credit card. This new accessory can control supply voltage from sources such as solar panels or batteries to downstream devices at up to 1A.

4. Motor drivers include real-time lead-angle control
A new generation of motor drive ICs reduces component count, minimise electrical and acoustic noise, and incorporates an automatic control function that allows for real-time lead-angle adjustment based on actual motor operating conditions. Toshiba's new three-phase brushless motor drive ICs offer full sinewave pulsewidth modulation (PWM) outputs, which minimise levels of acoustic and electrical noise without the need for external microcontrollers. The built-in lead-angle control function senses motor current and automatically varies the lead angle to ensure optimum efficiency for varying speed and load conditions.

7. 3G basestation reference design comes on a CD
picoChip Designs has developed the industry's first software reference design for 3G basestations. The "basestation on a CD" includes tested algorithms and source code for WCDMA FDD, providing manufacturers with a speedy, cost-competitive and low risk route to develop a fully compliant "carrier class" 3G basestation. Current development times for a basestation can be up to 24 months or more, with budgets of many tens of millions of dollars: this solution makes it possible to reduce these by up to 50%. In addition to manufacturers it is ideally suited to operators, system development houses and research organisations wishing to test out new features.

8. Speedy alternative to screw-on RF termination
Designed as an alternative to screw-on N-type connectors for many RF applications, particularly in new generation telecommunication systems such as GSM, PCS, WCDMA and UMTS, Radiall's new QN Quick-Lock connectors facilitate fast, secured and easy mating with minimum space requirements. No torque wrench is required as the QN connectors feature a positive snap-on locking system, which not only ensures a secure link but also eliminates the risk of loose or overtorqued connections.
