Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:
I'm afraid I have very little sympathy for companies who continually try to blame poor performance on outside factors. And one classic case arrived yesterday from Motorola, which has blamed its poor cellular sales figures in Asia on the SARS virus.
Let's be honest: SARS should have provided a boom for the telecomms sector - not a decline. And while Motorola's pronouncement has everything to do with pacifying shareholders and analysts, and nothing necessarily to do with logic, it reminds me of the classic GEC "three envelope" joke told to me many years ago by the then MD of successful Marconi operating unit (well, it was many years ago).
The joke concerns a newly appointed MD of a GEC company who was handed three brown envelopes by his retiring predecessor and was advised that these envelopes, opened in order, would see him through sticky situations in the months and years ahead.
Sure enough, a few months later, the new MD was summoned to meet with GEC supremo Lord Weinstock to explain his subsidiary's poor financial performance.
It was then that he remembered the three envelopes, sought them out, and opened the first of the three. It held a single sheet of paper with the inscription "Blame the previous management".
Amazingly, the strategy worked, and the young MD returned to his office a much-relieved man.
A couple of years later, he received a similar summons and sought out the second envelope. "Blame the global recession", it said. And, again, our hero survived the encounter with his boss.
It was some years later that the third call to account arrived. But the MD was confident that the third envelope would provide his salvation.
So imagine his consternation on finding that the third message read: "Time to prepare three envelopes for your successor".

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. Software automates PID controller development
A new EDA tool fully automates the development of analogue "proportional, integral, derivative" (PID) control loops. Reducing to a matter of minutes the time required to design and implement one of the most common types of control circuits in industrial, medical, and communications applications, the new AnadigmPID tool allows the user to build an analogue PID control loop on an integrated silicon platform by merely specifying the top-level control coefficients. Once designed and simulated, the controller circuit can be immediately downloaded to a field programmable analogue array (FPAA) device for testing and validation.

2. 64bit RISC processors ramp up the speed
Toshiba's latest 64bit MIPS-based general-purpose RISC processors use a 90nm CMOS process that allows them to operate at twice the speed of their predecessors. In addition, a power consumption of only 0.6W at the maximum frequency of 400MHz is currently the lowest power consumption of any processor in this product category. The new TMPR4955CFG and TMPR4956CXBG microprocessors operate at internal core voltages of 1.2V, while output voltages are 2.5 or 3.3V.

3. Ferrite disks stick to suppression
Steward has a new range of ferrite disks and plates it claims will significantly simplify the elimination of radiated and inductively coupled electromagnetic interference (EMI). The new disks and plates also provide a fast and reliable method for identifying EMI problems in prototype circuits, as well as helping to transfer heat from active components. Available in a range of sizes, the disks and plates are known as 'poker chips' because of their appearance.

Vicor has released the first family of products based on its new VI chip ball grid array (BGA) surface-mount (SMD) power component. The new family consists of 48 to 12V bus convertor modules (BCMs) for conventional intermediate bus architecture (IBA) applications. The VI chip BCMs provide much higher performance than traditional brick bus convertors, at a fraction of the cost. The VI chips (VICs) of Vicor's recently launched revolutionary factorised power architecture (FPA) technology, can process up to 200W in a small and light power BGA package.
