Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:
As an Englishman with a family name like mine, I used to be continually reminded that all the great names of the (British) electronics industry were Italian - Ferranti and Marconi to name but two.
So this week I have to take my hat off to the Italian Post Office which has just released a postage stamp belatedly recognising the achievement of Antonio Meucci in inventing the forerunner of the telephone, some 16 years before Alexander Graham Bell - a fact officially recognised in the US Congress almost a year ago.
Italian emigre Meucci developed and demonstrated his "teletrofono" in New York in 1860 as a communications aid for his bedridden wife. And while that date may be open to interpretation, he was certainly awarded a patent for the same device in 1871. Sadly, though, he could not afford to renew the patent and it lapsed in 1874, two years before Bell, who shared a laboratory with Meucci, filed his own patent for a telephone.
Interestingly, neither Bell nor Meucci died a rich man. But at least Meucci will now be acknowledged in the land of his birth.
I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.
Alternatively, the full stories behind all the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below.
In the meantime, if you have any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best wishes

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. Programmable capacitor chip tunes circuits onboard
New from Xicor, the X90100 digitally programmable capacitor can be used to tune the frequency response of electronic systems up to 400MHz. The X90100 can be set to 1 of 32 discrete capacitor steps ranging from 7.5 to 14.5pF in 0.20pF increments. Once the desired capacitor value is selected via an up/down interface it is stored in the on-chip EEPROM. The chip also has an integrated power-on-recall circuit that will restore the preset capacitor position from nonvolatile memory during power up thus eliminating the need of microcontroller initialisation. This reduces the cost of components and manufacturing.

2. Synthetic analogue platform gains data convertors
Barcelona design has developed the world's first data convertor synthesisers - running on its Prado analogue synthesis platform and based on its revolutionary geometric programming synthesis technology. The Dali synthesisers broaden Barcelona's offering for library developers and marks the extension of its analogue synthesis solution to SoC designers. Dali synthesisers allow rapid synthesis of complex, high performance analogue-to-digital and digital-to-analogue convertors in digital CMOS technologies, breaking time-to-market bottlenecks for mixed-signal SOCs.

3. Modular connectors take on fibre and coax options
Multi-Contact has expanded its CombiTac modular connector system with new fibre-optic and coaxial versions that offer enhanced performance flexibility and greater applications support. Based on a modular design construction, the CombiTac is a plug connection system that adapts to the specific requirements of individual customer applications. Due to its compact design it is ideal where space is at a premium, but where power, signals or data transmission are needed.

4. Low-profile enclosures intgrate sinking
A new range of low-profile extruded aluminium enclosures has been introduced by Lawtronics. The LHSK models provide a rugged low-thermal-impedance housing for sensitive electronics. Developed to offer ease of access for mounting printed circuit boards of various sizes, they provide effective thermal contacts for power devices. The free-standing or 3U rack-mount enclosures are supplied in two interlocking channels with end panels. This enables the electronics to be worked on in situ before the other half of the casing is slid into place.

5. Licence cuts the cost of TCP/IP stack
A new licensing model for the bf3Net TCP/IP protocol stack for the Texas Instruments TMS320 DSP family significantly reduces the initial licence cost for developers and for users who only require a small number of distribution licences. The bf3Net TCP/IP protocol stack was designed to make development of Internet-enabled DSP applications as fast as possible. Making extensive use of Texas Instruments eXpressDSP real-time software technology, the bf3Net TCP/IP protocol stack provides unmatched ease of integration.

6. Power supply checks global power compliance
The Multiformer MF 6 is the first in a new generation of power supplies from REO that will ensure products are able to function at the same performance level in countries with different mains supplies from the UK. It not only makes performance testing less time consuming and more efficient, but also results in safer products by ensuring correct operation at different voltages and frequencies. The Multiformer is ideal for testing susceptibility to over- and undervoltage levels.

7. Point-of-load power modules put sequencing onboard
A new generation of nonisolated power modules are up to 70% smaller than previous board-mounted convertors, and incorporate a tracking technology that simplifies voltage sequencing. Up to 96% efficient, the new point-of-load power modules will support step-down DC/DC conversion from a 3.3, 5 or 12V input with adjustable output voltages from 0.8 to 5.5V at output currents up to 30A. The power modules incorporate an innovative new Auto-Track sequencing technology, which allows multiple modules to be powered up and down in sequence without external circuitry.

8. Acquisition SoCs combine convertors with Flash MCU
Analog Devices has expanded its range of MicroConvertor data-acquisition and processing systems that integrate precision data convertors with state-of-the-art microprocessors and Flash memory, providing the solutions that designers need for the precise measurement of wide-dynamic-range, low-frequency signals. The new ADuC845 features two 24bit sigma-delta analogue-to-digital convertors (ADCs) with 10 single-ended or five fully differential channels on a single chip.

9. Novel quarter bricks optimise dynamic performance
A novel power conversion topology has allowed Artesyn Technologies to produce DC/DC brick convertors providing a quantum leap in performance. Delivering up to 100A from a single-board, quarter-brick module with a profile of just 7.7mm, new single-output convertors in the Typhoon family have the performance to replace a half brick - while simultaneously supporting the trend to narrower card pitches. High efficiency and a "quasi-VRM" dynamic response deliver unsurpassed design flexibility.

10. Sensors show heat distribution
Thermex is a novel temperature indicating sensor paper (TISP) that can be used to reveal temperature distribution between any two heated contacting surfaces. Thermex is a valuable aid in R and D and QC/QA for assessing heat distribution in electronics assemblies, as well as other industrial applications where heat analysis is important. In general, any application requiring a visual analysis of temperature between two surfaces can benefit from the capabilities of the TISP.
