Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:

We are continually being told that there is usually a simple answer to any problem - it's just a matter of thinking outside the square.

And while I appreciate that an introduction like that will frustrate the non-lateral thinkers among you, I can cite two perfect examples of the phenomenon that I have encountered today.

The first struck me in the bath (that well known breeding ground for good ideas).

I have used this column before to encourage exhibition organisers to embrace the web as a tool rather than as a threat, and indeed some exhibition websites do provide almost as valuable source of information as going to the exhibition itself.

But now, with the dual threats of terrorism and disease, long-distance travel becomes even less inviting, and the organisers of this season's shows such as DAC, Drives and Controls and Nepcon Brighton (to name but a few) will be checking visitor numbers with trepidation.

The argument has always been that the web is great for disseminating data, but exhibitions offer the added advantages of face-to-face meetings and physically seeing the products concerned. So why (I reasoned among the suds) not equip each exhibition booth with at least one webcam, with access regulated via the exhibition website?

The technology involved is now pretty trivial, combining low-cost cameras with wireless networking within the exhibition and web servers to the outside world. Exhibition organisers could charge for the service, and the only viruses the participants might contract would be easily treatable with software!

The second blinding revelation of the day came as the accidental byproduct of a completely unrelated web search.

Regular readers will know that I among that significant minority who cannot obtain broadband coverage short of erecting a satellite earth station in my back garden, and so the news that Skylinc (www.skylinc.co.uk) had devised a new platform for broadband access got my attention is spades.

The company's LIBRA "super-cell" system is capable of providing UK-wide two-way broadband access at fibre-optic speeds with just 18 basestations. The "outside the square" twist is that each of these basestations is tethered to a helium balloon floating 1.5km above the ground.

A similar system has been used for communications by the US military for many years, and yet this is the first instance (to my knowledge) of its use for Internet access. It is a fascinating project, and one that could be replicated in many areas of the world where the existing wired infrastructure cannot handle demand for broadband access.

I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.

Alternatively, the full stories behind all the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below.

In the meantime, if you have any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.

Best wishes

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. Embedded PC makes most of Low Voltage Pentium

The Little Board 700 single board computer aims to address the needs of demanding and power-sensitive embedded applications. The Little Board 700 is a full-featured embedded computer using the industry-standard EBX form factor, and is available with a choice of Intel processors: the Low Voltage Intel Pentium III processor with 512Kbyte cache at 933MHz: the Intel Celeron processor at 650MHz: or the Celeron processor at 400MHz.

2. Development kit speeds interactive applications

Mercator is the first 'out-of-the-box' MHEG-5 development kit to help set-top box and interactive digital TV manufacturers keep pace with the fast-evolving UK MHEG-5 digital standard and bring products to market more quickly, with a greater range of interactive applications. Cabot Communications believes Mercator will help manufacturers respond to rapidly growing consumer demand for the Freeview digital terrestrial platform, which is based on the MHEG-5 standard for interactive services and digital teletext.

3. Single-chip processor shrinks PVR designs

Zarlink Semiconductor has launched the industry's first fully integrated processing chips for terrestrial digital TV PVRs. With Zarlink's ZL10320/321 chips, consumer electronics companies can build personal video recorders in boxes about the size of a VHS cassette tape - 60% smaller than today's PVR models. PVRs, also known as DVRs (digital video recorders), are a category of digital set-top boxes that allow viewers to simultaneously receive, record to hard disk, and manipulate two digital TV channels.

4. Integrated sensor is key to tyre pressure system

The new MPXY8020A pressure sensor has the potential to help reduce blowouts, extend tyre life and improve petrol consumption. The MPXY8020A helps drivers maintain proper tyre pressure by notifying them when tyre pressure is not at the optimal pressure level. The sensor is available with microcontrollers and a radio frequency (RF) communication device, offering a comprehensive Motorola chipset for automotive engineers and helping automotive manufacturers address safety demands that have emerged in recent years.

5. FPGA design flow runs from IP to the PCB

Mentor Graphics has developed a comprehensive FPGA design flow that expands traditional FPGA tools with new technologies to address emerging challenges of complex FPGA designs. The three-part flow, which extends from high-level FPGA design to PCB design, includes existing and future technologies for the design and verification of the FPGAs, embedded systems, and PCBs containing FPGAs. The combination of large, complex IP blocks, memories, high speed IO, hard and soft embedded processors and embedded software on a single FPGA, exacerbated by the soaring system gate counts and packaging requirements, taxes the capabilities of traditional design methodologies.

6. Customisable MCU gains further graphics support

Triscend Corp has formed a strategic partnership with Casio Computer Company to further extend the reach of the Triscend E5 customisable microcontroller into the liquid crystal display (LCD) market. Triscend will collaborate with Casio in providing customers with pre-engineered support for Casio's graphics LCDs, including touchscreen panels. As the industry's only 8bit microcontroller family that interfaces directly to graphics LCDs, the E5 devices simplify design of end products leveraging LCDs, reducing OEM design costs and speeding time to market.

10. High efficiency for low-cost solar cell

SunPower Corp is sampling a device it claims to be the world's most-efficient, low-cost silicon solar cell. Based on a novel rear-contact design which maximises the working cell area, hides unsightly wires and makes automated production easier, the A-300 achieves over 20% efficiency, compared with currently available cells in the 12-15% range. The US National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) has verified 20.4% conversion efficiency for the A-300. The 125mm, single-crystal A-300 cell generates 3W of electricity providing the most efficient cost-per-watt solution in the photovoltaic (PV) industry.
