Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:

As if to prove my point, last week's comments about the slow adoption of Bluetooth technology drew a highly mixed bag of responses, ranging from total agreement to total disagreement. (But at least nobody gave me the "What is Bluetooth" response I had feared.)

I must at this point acknowledge my colleague Russ Swan, Editor of our sister site Laboratorytalk (www.laboratorytalk.com) who managed to come up with half a dozen technologies that have taken longer to arrive than Bluetooth. But that was not the purpose of my rant.

My basic premise is simply this: can any technology claim to be truly all-pervasive (as Bluetooth's proponents have claimed it will become) without it becoming a household name?

In the interests of balance, though, it is worth recording the comments of the pro-Bluetooth lobby, such as these from David Marsden, PR consultant to Bluetooth specialist Cambridge Silicon Radio. David writes:

"In response to your (perhaps rhetorical) question: "Can there ever have been a technology longer in arriving than Bluetooth?", I would like to offer a response and even suggest that the question should actually be: "Is there any technology standard which is so widely adopted by all the major manufacturers within such a short timeframe as Bluetooth?".

Let me offer some justification for this: Microsoft, Apple, Dell, IBM, Panasonic, Nokia, Ericsson, Sony - a small percentage of the industry leaders which have accepted Bluetooth and already launched Bluetooth products and implemented it into operating systems. Bluetooth, having shipped around 35 million chips in 2002 alone, is a huge growth sector. Even the most conservative growth estimates forecast a year-on-year growth to be 3x (as it was last year).

IEEE802.11b (WiFi) has been around for more than a decade, and yet shipments of WiFi chipsets are still only a fraction of those of Bluetooth, which has only had a few short years to make its mark. In terms of adoption, many of the larger names have still not adopted the standard into their products and many are waiting around for 802.11a or g as WiFi does not support the transmission of voice.

USB was born back in 1993 but did not receive widespread adoption until 1998 with its support in Windows 98. Talk to Apple and it will tell you that USB would have been a flop had the company not adopted it for Macs. Bluetooth support was adopted in an amazingly short time by comparison in both Windows XP and Apple's OSX.

In terms of it being the time to talk to the consumers, I think you are right and the industry is realising this - in terms of the chip companies, it is their job to talk to their customers, the OEMs and product makers. It is the job of the representative body, the Bluetooth SIG, to do the rest and the SIG is now doing this".

Well said David. It has always been the Bluetooth SIG's task to promote the technology to the masses. It's about time we saw some results.

I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.
