Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:

Can there ever have been a technology longer in arriving than Bluetooth?

Two years ago in issue 15 of the Electronicstalk Newsletter (www.electronicstalk.com/news/doc/doc515.html) I bemoaned the lack of mass-market publicity for the technology.

Two years on and the technology has hit its intended price points. Chips, modules and software stacks are all readily available - and the volume prices that are quoted are well within the "magic figures" the industry originally proposed as essential for mass-market acceptance.

So it was with more than a little surprise that I surveyed the blank looks around the table at a recent luncheon when I brought up the subject of Bluetooth. For while none of those present was an engineer, all used computers in their work, including one who ran her own company's website and another involved in IT support.

Certainly, Bluetooth-enabled products are appearing on the market, including innovations such as BridgeCo's wireless speakers detailed in a case study below. But as far as the user is concerned the radio technology might just as well be an "old-wave" short-range device as used in their car keyfob.

Ironically the traditional low-power radio industry has been in a lather about Bluetooth for several years, fearing that its business would imminently be wiped out overnight. Indeed, we have had years of publicity within our industry to this effect: Bluetooth would become all-pervasive, and change everyone's lives.

Surely now it's time to stop preaching to the converted and to talk to those who really matter - the consumers.

I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.

Alternatively, the full stories behind all the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below.

In the meantime, if you have any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.

Best wishes

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. Power over LAN supply shrinks to DIMM format

PowerDsine has released its new Power over LAN dual inline memory module (PoL-DIMM) technology, based on its embedded, IEEE 802.3af-compliant Power over LAN ASIC. The new PoL-DIMM module consists of fewer components than existing technology, enabling vendors to quickly and easily integrate PowerDsine's PoL technology into new Ethernet switches at a significantly lower cost. While other comparable solutions on the market today require several hundred components in order to integrate power over Ethernet (PoE) into a 48-port Ethernet switch, PowerDsine's PoL-DIMM solution affords full 802.3af-compliant PoE support in a switch with a mere seven components.

2. Low thermal resistance for smart power modules

Toshiba's latest 600 and 1200V compact intelligent power modules (C-IPMs) feature thermal resistance ratings up to 50% lower than previous technologies. The result is a family of devices that allow designers to save board space, reduce component count and minimise cooling requirements without sacrificing functionality or output power. Suitable for general-purpose inverters and motor drives, the new C-IPMs integrate up to seven IGBTs and high levels of built-in intelligence into a single package.

3. Conductive thermal interface tape aids cooling

A new electrically insulating phase-change material simplifies and speeds the implementation of thermal management solutions by providing an easy-to-handle thermally conductive and electrically isolated interface between electronic power devices and heatsinks. The Bergquist Company's Hi-Flow 300 is an electrically insulating material consisting of a thermally conductive phase change compound coated on two sides of a thermally conductive polyimide film.

4. Adaptive processor speeds low-power embedded tasks

Intrinsity has developed a new FastMath adaptive signal processor product it claims delivers the highest programmable performance for power-constrained embedded applications. The company has also revealed production pricing for the award-winning FastMath and FastMIPS processors at 2 and 1.5GHz. The FastMath-LP device uses the same pinout and delivers the same functionality as the FastMath processor, but is optimised for applications that require lower-cost, cooler thermal solutions.

5. Integrated receiver speeds optical systems

Zarlink Semiconductor has unveiled the industry's highest-performance receiver for optical signals operating at up to 3.125Gbit/s. Zarlink's ZL60011 device detects and amplifies high-bandwidth optical pulses with unmatched efficiency, which allows designers to reduce the cost, size, and complexity of optical equipment. Traditionally, discrete photodiodes and amplifiers, linked by complex circuitry, have been required to reliably detect and pre-amplify high-speed optical pulses. Zarlink's ZL60011 optical receiver saves designers time, money, and board space by integrating a highly sensitive PIN photodiode, a low-noise transimpedance and limiting amplifier, and a photocurrent monitor into one compact, off-the-shelf component.

6. Analogue front end boasts 14bit precision

A novel low-power data acquisition system (DAS) provides complete signal conditioning and conversion for portable and battery-powered systems, low-power control systems, smart sensor applications and general-purpose instrumentation. The low-priced ADS7871 offers customers system processing capability and built-in flexibility by integrating a 14bit, 48Ksample/s successive approximation (SAR) analogue-to-digital convertor, four-channel differential/eight-channel single-ended multiplexer, programmable gain amplifier (PGA), precision voltage reference, reference buffer amplifier, onboard clock generator and serial interface for control and data retrieval.

7. System-level design takes advantage of SystemC

The ConvergenSC product family is the EDA industry's first system-level design solution using a common infrastructure for both design and verification, built expressly for SystemC. Leveraging insight gained from its global customer base and its leadership in the development of the SystemC standard, CoWare created ConvergenSC (pronounced convergency) to integrate multidisciplinary requirements of SoC designs. System architects, platform and intellectual property (IP) developers, and system integrators now have a SystemC-based environment to rapidly create optimal, differentiated SoC designs.

8. I/O cards simplify acquisition system design

A new family of stackable I/O modules from Mosaic Industries further expands the control capabilities of Mosaic's C-programmable embedded computers and touchscreen-controlled operator interfaces. The new expansion modules, dubbed Wildcards, are ideal for applications requiring multiple I/O points, high resolution, data acquisition and real-time control. These modular 2 x 2.5in plug-in boards can be mixed and matched to create specialised I/O customised to particular applications.

9. Transceiver pushes data 100m over Cat5 cable

Finisar has developed the first 1000Base-T GBIC with autonegotiation capability. The FCM-8521-3 features a standard RJ45 receptacle for the client interface, and a GBIC MSA compliant connector and pinout for the host interface. The module has excellent EMI performance and typically dissipates 1.5W of power. A transmission distance of 100m is guaranteed over the entire operating temperature and voltage range using standard Cat5 cable.

10. Reference design upgrades legacy TVs to digital

The latest addition to the Nexperia family of iDTV semiconductor solutions allows DVB (digital video broadcast) capabilities to be added to existing low-end and mid-end analogue TV set designs. The pnx83xx is supplied as a simple reference system solution that greatly reduces the need for application software development. This provides set makers with a short time-to-market and low investment route for introducing new iDTV and set-top-box receivers.
