Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:
Many thanks to everyone who followed up last week's editorial with further ideas on where to find information on "mystery" or obsolete components - and there were a lot of you.
Fortunately nobody could think of a better starting point than Electronicstalk itself (so at least we're doing something right). But there were some excellent suggestions of further places to look.
Personally, I've always been a great fan of Google, but several of you suggested looking at some of the newer multiple search engines such as the QueryServer (www.queryserver.com). Suffice it to say that I was so impressed I've added it to my own list of favourite sites.
More specifically on the electronic components side, two very useful reference sites were recommended: the SMD Codebook is an essential reference guide (www.marsport.demon.co.uk/smd/mainframe.htm) and the Chip Directory (www.xs4all.nl/~ganswijk/chipdir/index.htm) is beautifully organised for finding those "mystery" devices with partially obscured serial numbers.
A final honourable mention should also go to RiverOne (www.riverone.com), a 20+ year old US based company that specialises in end-of-line and obsolete components as well as shortage items.
I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.
Alternatively, the full stories behind all the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below.
In the meantime, if you have any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best wishes
Laurence Marchini, Editor

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. MCUs take low-power radio links onboard
Microchip now has a complete system solution for short-range unidirectional RF communications. Consisting of three microcontrollers with integrated transmitters and two receivers, the new devices provide solutions supporting frequency bands from 260 to 930MHz. By combining the rfPIC12F675 microcontroller/transmitters with either the rfRXD0420 receiver or rfRXD0920 receiver, users can create a wireless unidirectional communication link for embedded control applications. The receivers can also be combined with Microchip's existing rfPIC devices and Keeloq encoders for remote sensing and control designs.

2. Multiboard emulator scales up to bigger challenges
Emulation and Verification Engineering (EVE) has unveiled an advanced, multiboard hardware verification system that extends the capacity of designs from 1.5 million to 12 million ASIC-equivalent gates. ZeBu - or zero bugs - is a hardware platform used to accelerate the verification process of field programmable gate array (FPGA)-based designs, as well as the software development cycle for embedded software designs.

3. Board-on-chip design marries hardware and software
Altium is set to preview a new design technology that brings together the worlds of software and hardware design in a single, integrated design environment. This new technology enables engineers to use board-level design methodologies to both design and implement an entire digital system - including embedded microprocessor cores and the software that runs on them - onto an FPGA. Altium claims that this new technology gives engineers the power to literally start putting their board designs straight into FPGAs, a process that Altium calls "board-on-chip" (BoC) design.

4. Light pipes reduce ESD risks
Press-fit panel-mount light pipes can protect circuits from accidental ESD by isolating the PCB from human contact. Bivar's PLP series devices - now available from Optosource, the specialist LED distribution arm of Marl International - also ensure that front panels present a uniform display, enhancing viewer confidence. Ideal for any application where consistent indication is vital, PLP series light pipes are press fit by hand from the rear of the panel. No additional hardware or special tools are required for installation, reducing assembly time and cost.

5. D-sub system combines ruggedness with EMC
InduCom from Harting is a new family of D-subminiature connectors and RF shielded diecast hoods which combine ruggedness and excellent EMC performance for applications such as industrial fieldbus systems, power supplies and transportation. Designed to meet the requirements of the DIN41652, MIL-C-24-308 and IEC60 807 standards, InduCom includes hoods capable of housing D-sub connectors with 9-50 ways, with one, two or three cable entries.

6. Ambient light sensor produces digital output
The first ambient light sensor that converts light intensity to a digital signal output capable of direct SMBus interface is now available from Pacer Components. The TSL2550, manufactured by Texas Advanced Optoelectronic Solutions (TAOS) is designed to help reduce overall system power by measuring the ambient or available light as a means of controlling display screen backlighting in portable equipment such as laptop computers, mobile phones, PDAs, camcorders and GPS systems.

7. Easy intro to PC-based data acquisition
In response to a growing demand for PC-based data acquisition to be made even easier to use, Adept Scientific has put together what it reckons is a package which can be used 'out-of-the-box'. This consists of a DynaRes series plug-and-play PCI board, 1m of cable, a screw terminal/signal conditioning pod, and DaqView software for Windows. Users simply fit the board into their PCs, attach their sensors to the terminal unit, and install the software: data acquisition can begin within minutes, even for inexperienced users.

8. New approach to embedded industrial I/O
Sealevel Systems has released the first four board-level products based on a novel embedded industrial I/O architecture, eI/O. Unlike traditional I/O products, eI/O products achieve expansion in groups of eight inputs or eight outputs per module. This modularity allows the user to mix and match modules providing relay, optoisolated I/O, A/D, D/A and other commonly used I/O as appropriate to create a customised embedded I/O subsystem that is optimised for size and cost-effectiveness.

9. TCP/IP stack stands alone in certification
The Lynx Certifiable Stack (LCS) is the industry's first DO-178B Level A certified stand-alone TCP/IP stack for safety- and security-critical environments. LCS allows any developer of safety-critical devices the ability to leverage a commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) stack that is certifiable to Level A.

10. Power chips target Ethernet transmission
Texas Instruments has released its first power management ICs for the emerging "power over Ethernet" market. The two new ICs allow DC power and data to be delivered and sourced over a single standard Ethernet cable, resulting in reduced system cost, increased capability and reliability for developers of Ethernet-based systems and appliances. Fully compliant with the soon-to-be ratified IEEE 802.3af standard, TI's devices are being designed into Ethernet-powered applications such as WLAN access points, IP phones, security systems, point-of-sale terminals and power sourcing equipment such as Ethernet routers, switches and hubs.
