Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:
Among the regular arrivals in the Electronicstalk postbag each week are a liberal sprinkling of requests from frustrated readers trying to source or replace an outdated (or even mystery) component. So, for what its worth, here are a few tips for any of you who either know what you want but don't know where to get it; or, worse still, can't fully identify the component in question.
Assuming you have a part number to play with (or even a partial part number because some of the characters have worn away) you have a good starting point. And what better place to start then the Electronicstalk site search engine (accessible from our home page at www.electronicstalk.com). To be fair, as we've only been running for a few years, the chances of finding any seriously outdated part numbers is a little slim, so the next stage is to take the macro view and hit one of the major search engines, such as Google (www.google.com).
It's amazing that many people do not consider this route - especially when you try it in anger. Google is actually rather good at turning up references to long alphanumeric strings - such as fatal Windows exception errors. It's only when you're looking for things that can only be described in words that the list of "possibles" starts to get irrelevant.
Stage three involves enlisting the help of a broadline distributor - and the broader the better. Geography need not be a barrier here (particularly as we're only trying at this stage to identify the component), although some might require registration before allowing you to use their search facilities. Personal favourites here include Farnell (www.farnell.com) and RS Components (rswww.com).
Finally, if all else fails (or if you've ignored all my previous tips), there are a number of distributors that specialise in sourcing obsolete components, both in the USA and in Europe. These include (in no particular order) American Electronic Resource (www.aeri.com), 1-Source Electronic Components (www.1sourcecomponents.com), Factory Direct (www.factorydirect.co.uk) and Olympus Products (www.olympusproducts.co.uk).
Sites like these often incorporate e-mail contacts for you to describe the component in question, which is particularly useful if the serial number is totally illegible or missing.
So, happy hunting. And if any of you have any other favourite sources of such information please let me know and I'll share it with the rest of our readers.
I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.
Alternatively, the full stories behind all the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below.
In the meantime, if you have any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best wishes

2. Tool produces optimised memory architectures
IMEC's new Atomium/MemoryArchitect tool helps to design the perfect memory architecture for multimedia and telecommunications applications. This extension of IMEC's Atomium toolsuite (a toolbox for optimising memory I/O using geometrical models) is the first memory synthesis and mapping tool that is able to handle complex applications under real-life constraints. In many applications, data storage and the transfer of data to/from memory are the main bottlenecks in terms of performance, power and silicon area. Therefore, the design of an optimised memory architecture is essential for a low-cost solution.
