Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:
Eagle-eyed readers may have spotted a few changes to Electronicstalk of late - but sadly we can hardly call them changes for the better.
Our innovation of providing a "register once, use many times" mechanism for requesting brochures from suppliers has proved very popular with our readers. Sadly, it has all been too much for some of the bigger names in the semiconductor business.
So, unfortunately, certain product stories featured in this newsletter (and on the Electronicstalk website) do not carry a "Request a free brochure by post" link as the supplier in question has no mechanism for answering such requests.
All this appears rather perplexing. It begs the question: why bother to publicise a product in the press if you are not prepared to follow up the publicity with datasheets and (ultimately) sales?
Much of the answer lies in a sea-change that the semiconductor industry had to face in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Having realised that demand and prices were aspects which could not be totally controlled, the industry turned to the task of reducing its cost of sales. And the means to the end proved to be simple. By shifting ever-greater volumes of business to the distribution sector, and reducing direct sales to all but the largest customers, semiconductor manufacturers could reduce their headcounts and their physical logistics operations to the barest bones.
In some cases, distributors have taken over the marketing operation as well. But for the majority, this is best left as a central function, avoiding the chaos of the same product being launched by multiple distributors in each territory covered.
So what do you do if you want further information on a product covered in Electronicstalk when there is no direct response mechanism?
The first port of call has to be the manufacturer's website (fingers crossed - there really ought to be a datasheet there somewhere) where you will also hopefully be able find contact addresses for distributors that cover your geographical and technology area. Eventually you should be able to find somebody who actually wants to sell you the product you want.
Of course, if all this sounds like too much effort, it's worth remembering that there are very few "unique" products in the world today. The chances are that another manufacturer will have a direct equivalent for the device you are after - and very probably a "Request a free brochure by post" link on Electronicstalk.
I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.
Alternatively, the full stories behind all the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below.
In the meantime, if you have any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best wishes

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. Chipsets redefine distributed power designs
International Rectifier has unveiled the first members in a family of DC bus convertor chipsets that redefine the underlying distributed power architecture for 48V-input, 150W board-mounted power (BMP) convertors used in telecomms and networking systems. IR's DC bus convertor chipset architecture establishes benchmarks for overall efficiency, power density and simplicity, delivering more than 96% efficiency at 20A/150Wout in a circuit footprint less than 1.7in2.

2. Data acquisition chip takes MCU onboard
A new family of low-noise (75nV), 24bit data acquisition SoC solutions incorporates a quad 16bit D/A convertor and I2C interface. The unequalled integration of high-precision analogue and digital processing makes the MSC1211 the ideal choice for demanding high-resolution measurement applications in industrial process control, portable instrumentation, weigh scales, smart transmitters and chromatography. By surpassing customers' complex design requirements at a price significantly below the cost to duplicate the same functionality, the MSC1211 stands as the most valuable data conversion system on the market.

3. Coverification package analyses system performance
Version 5 of the Seamless environment extends the use of the tool beyond hardware/software coverification to system performance analysis. The Seamless tool is the de facto standard for hardware/software coverification and new features in Version 5 enable designers to leverage data uniquely available from coverification to characterise and improve on system performance bottlenecks. Armed with the performance data provided by the Seamless tool, designers can optimise their systems by tuning designs to meet performance metrics and verifying hardware and software interfaces in a single environment.

4. FPGAs put 90nm process to competitive advantage
Xilinx reckons its new family of programmable chips will propel programmable logic devices further into high-volume, low-cost applications traditionally served by custom chips with fixed architectures. With the new Spartan-3 family, Xilinx is leveraging both 90nm and 300mm advanced manufacturing technologies to achieve unprecedented density and price for FPGAs. By setting a new FPGA price-density standard, Xilinx will be able to target a $23 billion total available market and address new higher volume applications in the ASIC market.

5. Seminars to extol autocode enabled technology
The time has come for autocode enabled technology to be used in delivering production software, claims leading exponent Pi Technology, which is to offer seminars in the UK sharing its research and development on the 'hot topic'. Having developed what the company believes to be an industry first in three fully auto-generated and safety-critical applications for a production vehicle, Pi Technology was encouraged by the response for a knowledge-sharing event in Michigan, USA.

Molex Triad differential pair (TDP) connectors are capable of handling bandwidths up to 5.0Gbit/s. This all-new connector features an innovative triad contact configuration of differential signal and ground lines to optimise bandwidth. The new connectors have a shielded dual-row cable-to-board interface for high-speed performance and a 100ohm controlled impedance. Applications include LVDS servers, routers, switches, storage/network equipment, TMDS digital displays, portable DVI devices, automotive displays and multiple high-speed differential pair signal equipment.

8. Convertors step up to higher voltages
Extending the life of installed equipment while simultaneously providing the new 2.5G and 3G services must be the 'dream ticket' for telecomms service providers. If the new 48V powered technologies can overlay the installed base of 24V powered 2G equipment, operators can protect and leverage this significant investment. Providing one of the most cost-effective and flexible solutions to integrate new and legacy power systems, Advanced Power Conversion supplies high power density step-up DC/DC convertors as part of its standard range.

10. Software extends to full-speed Bluetooth
Cambridge Silicon Radio has developed an extended version of its BlueCore host software (BCHS). Called BCHS-HCI, it includes the source code for all layers down to the host controller interface (HCI). With CSR's buyout option, customers are given full access to the source code to enable a much more complete software-based Bluetooth offering which is royalty-free and hence very price competitive for mass market applications such as mobile phones, access points or PDAs. The HCI split also brings performance advantages of full Bluetooth datarates up to 721Kbit/s and the full piconet support of seven slaves.
