Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:
Politicians are an entertaining lot, aren't they? Around the world and across all political complexions, the principal role of the politician is not so very different from that of any other public relations professional.
It's all a matter of spin - and once you accept this doctrine, that's when they start to become entertaining, rather than annoying. (Nobody can have failed to be entertained by the words of the former Iraqi Information Minister Mohammed Saeed al-Sahaf.)
But when politicians start to talk technology, they had better make sure that their briefings are accurate. History is littered with some wonderful political gaffes when classics or arts educated politicians feel the need to step into a technological argument.
Having personally interviewed many British politicians over the years, I can personally testify to many tales of ineptitude (but have chosen not to do so on the grounds that in most cases, the MP or Minister concerned was clearly only repeating what he or she had been told, and could very easily deny it later).
But these days politics is a multimedia experience, and any politician with half an ego is more likely to commit his or her thoughts to their own website. So step forward US Congressman Darrell Issa (www.issa.house.gov) with his thoughts on why CDMA is so superior to GSM.
For the benefit of those who have so far missed the story, Congressman Issa is keen that US companies should benefit most from the reconstruction of Iraq, and has proposed that the country's mobile network should be rebuilt based on CDMA rather than GSM.
According to Issa, CDMA is "…widely recognized (sic) as technically superior to European GSM technology". Well, he would say that, wouldn't he if the only people he asked were those of his Californian constituents with a vested interest. However, his real agenda is not hidden when he warns that (if GSM were chosen) "royalties paid on the technology would flow to French and European sources, not US patent holders".
I think it is safe to say that the congressman will not be vacationing in France this year. Perhaps it would also be best if Iraq was able to choose its own mobile technology.
I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.
