Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:

If you're anything like me and receive anything from 100 to 300 e-mails a day, the concept of a spam filter is an appealing one. This topic was brought to mind recently when one of the suppliers listed on Electronicstalk recently installed anti-spam measures - and promptly rejected a bunch of sales leads from readers of our site.

Such software is clearly growing in popularity. And, within reason, I see no problem with its use - so long as it is programmed correctly.

For example, I know full well that after our server has dutifully mailed this newsletter to the 15,000 or so of you who at one time or other have requested it, I will personally receive a dozen or so automatic e-mails from filter programs either asking me to visit a website to confirm my identity or telling me that my message has been rejected.

This second category is an interesting one, as it comes from a class of mail filtering program (usually installed on a company's mail server) designed to intercept certain key words and phrases which are known to occur in spam mail, including that sent out by pornographic websites. This is usually performed using a simple string search - but this does have its limitations.

I can perfectly understand the motivations of a company IT manager who sets this software to reject any mail with the string "free subscription". But sometimes a problem can arise when the string is not delineated properly so that the program intercepts only part of a (perfectly valid) word.

So, sadly there are a number of Electronicstalk readers out there who never receive their copies of the newsletter when we include stories about any form of equipment described as an analyser. (And I don't hold out much hope this week with a couple of debuggers among the products.)

This may appear trivial, but it does illustrate the limitations of such a sledgehammer approach. It is a very brave company that seeks to filter the spam out of its sales leads.

So while the concept of a spam filter is appealing, I shall continue for now to apply my own neural-network-based adaptive filtering scheme. (Or should I say do it myself.)

I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.

Alternatively, the full stories behind all the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below.

In the meantime, if you have any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.

Best wishes

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. MV mixed-signal process cuts die area up to 50%

The Smartmos8 medium voltage (MV) process allows power, analogue and digital logic functions to be manufactured on a single chip in less space than previous generations. This integration helps designers of automotive systems, industrial controls and consumer electronics simplify system design, lower system costs and improve reliability. Smartmos8 MV combines voltage capability up to 90V, along with power and analogue functions while leaving room to build the logic processor onto the same die - an industry first.

4. Best of both worlds for rear-release connectors

Amphenol has a new series of rear-release connectors that incorporates the best features of two of its established connectors - its reverse bayonet and its rear release metal clip contact retention systems - to produce a new version that provides easy insertion, a positive stop when inserting contacts, and accurate, secure mating on connection. The new GTC-M rear release connectors are ideal for applications that require heavy-duty connections, including railway, mass transit, commercial and geophysical applications.

5. Antenna discriminates between microwave sources

The Discriminator is a novel concept in high-performance antenna design, available for the 10, 26, 28, 31, 32, 38 and 60GHz bands. This 31.2cm diameter antenna features first side lobes 23dB down from the main beam. This exceptional performance ensures greatly reduced interference from other microwave transmitters when colocation is required. The ideal choice for reducing overall system cost, the new antenna series delivers high performance in a customised integrated package.
