Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:

Today's story of a new microcontroller from Motorola specified for extreme temperature operation in avionics applications put me in mind of a conversation I had some years ago with a military semiconductor specialist.

The conversation occurred during the last Gulf War, and it was then that I found out what the difference was between low-cost commercial-grade devices and their proverbial arm-and-a-leg costing military equivalents.

At the time I admitted to being surprised that there was no substantial difference in the basic devices: it was purely that they had been tested to rigorous specifications and packaged accordingly. The fact that the commercial grade equivalent would almost certainly meet the same specs if push came to shove. (But that's hardly what you'd want of a mission-critical component!)

So it is with the MPC555 and MPC566 microcontrollers. Motorola has managed to push the lower end of the temperature envelope down from -40 to -55C - thereby avoiding the need to employ an outside test house to qualify the parts for lower temperature operation at high altitude.

With such a high electronics content in the current generations of smart munitions, it must be tempting to specify lower-cost components on the grounds that they only have to work once. However, such are the consequences of malfunction, military- and aerospace-grade devices will still carry a cost premium.

I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.

Alternatively, the full stories behind all the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below.

In the meantime, if you have any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. Trench process slashes MOSFET on resistance

ON Semiconductor has developed a novel trench process technology that it claims on average delivers a 40% improvement in on-resistance when compared with other trench processes on the market today. Before the end of the year, the company plans to introduce a complete portfolio of P-channel and N-channel MOSFETs that are based on this innovative trench technology. Focus applications of the initial devices - to be launched this quarter - will be load management, circuit charging, battery protection and DC/DC conversion in portable and wireless products.
