Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:
Forgive me for revisiting an old subject, but this week on three separate occasions I have been forced to remind somebody of the importance of standards. And I'm not even talking about ISO standards, Euro Norms, DIN, SAE or even British Standards (remember them?).
No, I refer to standard units of measurement, or more particularly those of the Systeme International d'Unites (SI units), which have been in common usage since 1960.
Regular readers of Electronicstalk will know that wherever possible, we will always quote quantities in SI units, except where the non-SI version is obviously more appropriate. Let's face it, a 19in rack might be 482.6mm wide, but the least ambiguous way of communicating the concept is as a 19in rack.
But therein lies the real purpose of having a defined system of units of measurement: just as in any language, definitions are made to prevent ambiguity.
SI units are pretty much universally accepted. And there are great advantages to this. For example, if in Electronicstalk you were to read a quantity expressed as 40kW, you could safely assume that this was a measure of power - 40 kilowatts.
However, there are many quantities that fall outside the published list of SI units, particularly in the computer domain, and it can often be useful to abbreviate or contract these quantities to make them quicker and easier to write. And so long as the writer makes it clear what these abbreviations mean, I have no problem with this practice. But, woe betide anyone who uses an abbreviation which already has a meaning in SI units.
The classic one of these is of course using S/s to mean samples per second. Of course, if we apply the correct SI definitions to the abbreviation, we arrive at Siemens per second, which is a pretty meaningless concept in the context of and A/D convertor, and so unlikely to cause too much confusion.
But among this week's crop of ambiguities was an absolute classic: a DSP chip with 40kW of RAM. Now I rather like the idea of such a compact device with a power output similar to that of a domestic central heating system (but think of the size of the heatsink). But suffice it to say that kilowatt was not the unit the writer was trying to communicate. So when it appeared in print on the site, it had been discretely amended to 40Kword of RAM.
Fortunately, on that occasion a simple e-mailed query brought about the clarification. However, I'm still trying to work out what a different writer meant when describing a data logger as "featuring 500MHz battery technology"!
I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. Processors stack up advantages for PDA integration
Three new processors for PDAs incorporate the latest microprocessor packaging and stacking techniques to deliver higher performance and longer battery life in less space than previous versions. PDA capabilities have increased significantly over the last year to include integrated WiFi (802.11) high-speed wireless Internet access, colour screens, integrated cameras and more. This has resulted in the need for greater processing and memory capabilities, all delivered by smaller chips.

2. Controller/inverter chipset optimises PWM drives
Toshiba has a new motor controller and inverter chipset it claims will significantly reduce the acoustic and electrical noise of PWM motor drive applications as well as improving efficiency levels and minimising component count. Toshiba's TB6551F three-phase brushless motor controller provides a full sinewave PWM output without the need for an external microcontroller, and the new TPD4103AK is a single-chip 500V inverter. Together the devices deliver a compact, two-chip solution for the high-efficiency, low-noise driving of three-phase brushless DC motors or AC induction motors with ratings of up to 400V.

3. Screened enclosures survive earthquake simulation
EMI/RFI shielded enclosures from Equipto Electronics provide an exceptionally high 80dB of attenuation from 200MHz to 1GHz and 60dB from 1 to 10GHz. Originally designed for a new defence systems programme, the enclosures continue to meet the high EMI/RFI attenuation even after completing a NEBS Zone 4 earthquake simulation - the most severe test for seismic resistance. Equipto Electronics achieved the new level of performance using its "Heavy Duty" line of electronic cabinets.

4. Controller simplifies switch from CRT to LCD
The new GC2000 is a controller interface for enhancing the on-screen performance of LCD displays. The new GC2000 has been developed by GDS to allow a CRT monitor to be replaced with an LCD panel, without the original functionality of the display being affected. The controller also extends the capabilities of the LCD panel, by enabling additional input signals such as DVI standard and Pal to be rescaled and played into the panel.

5. 0.3mm pitch for board-board connector system
Honda claims to have produced the world's finest pitch board-board connector system, with the release of a new ultraminiature 80-way connector on a 0.3mm pitch that occupies just over half the space of a standard miniature equivalent. Honda's new system, sized at just 14 x 4mm for the 80-way plug, is believed to be the industry's most compact board-board system, the majority of alternatives being on 0.5mm pitch. The new Honda plug occupies just 56mm2 of PCB real estate, compared to a popular 80-way 0.5mm pitch alternative that occupies 104.5mm2 - nearly twice as much.

7. Convertors storm to higher densities
All products in the new Typhoon family of DC/DC convertors employ highly innovative - patent pending - power conversion technology, and Artesyn reckons the new devices will establish new performance benchmarks for the industry. Typhoon convertors provide best-in-class, breakout performance in four categories: output current capability, efficiency, height and cost. At launch, the family comprises a single-output eighth-brick convertor capable of delivering up to 40A at 1.8V, and two dual-output quarter-bricks offering 20A per channel.
