Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:
Sometimes the numbers are just numbers, and they rattle blithely off the tongue. But then there are other times when (for example) you read the spec of a new device and stop for a moment to consider the implications.
Take today's top product story on the Electronicstalk website, detailed in our "Top Ten" below. Toshiba has developed a single-die NAND Flash memory device capable of holding 2Gbit of data. It would be very easy to let that pass with a passing nod to impressive levels of integration etc. But consider for a moment: 2Gbit is 256Mbyte. And that's on a single chip.
Ironically I remember attending the launch by Intel of the world's first mass market Flash memory devices some 15 years ago. I say ironically as there was much talk at the launch of the continuing validity of Moore's law. And while that theory - which postulates that the maximum number of transistors on a chip will double every 18 months - may have slipped occasionally in the intervening 15 years, the concept of a 2Gbit device must come close to putting the curve back on track.
Another number in the news today bears closer scrutiny as well, with the news that Marconi appears to be closing in on refinancing its crippling GBP 4 billion debt. The bad news for existing shareholders is that they are likely to be left with just 0.5% of the equity of the company.
The GEC-Marconi operation of old would probably have been rubbing its hands at the prospect of war in Iraq. The current operation, it seems, would be hard pressed to find two brass farthings to rub together.
I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.
Alternatively, the full stories behind all the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below.
In the meantime, if you have any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best wishes

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. Bigger Flash devices promise monster card density
Toshiba has doubled the capacity of its largest single-die NAND Flash memory lineup with the release of a 2Gbit device. The company has also developed a 4Gbit device that stacks two of the 2Gbit NAND Flash dice in a single package. The new memories will greatly increase the capacity of Flash memory cards, making them capable of supporting a wider range of applications. Samples of the TC58DVG14B1FT00 2Gbit NAND Flash memory are available now and samples of the TH58DVG24B1FT00 4Gbit device will be available next month.

5. Filtered connectors simplify design for EMC
Today's increase in frequency and power of electromagnetic interference (EMI) or electronic noise has become a major threat to the integrity of modern electronics equipment. A practical solution is to incorporate multipole EMI filtering elements within a connector shell. Advantages of this solution include further space savings, reduced assembly cost and simplification of equipment enclosure design. The optimum way of providing these filtering elements is through the use of planar capacitor arrays.
