Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:

Anyone who has ever gone beyond radio theory and actually tried to design and then manufacture any radio-based system will know that despite many attempts to demystify the subject, radio remains the original "black art".

Having been associated with the low-power radio business for some years, I have lost count of the number of so-called foolproof radio components and systems that have either fallen by the wayside or that have proved so difficult to apply that their use has been limited to niche applications.

So it is good to see that even the "big boys" can get it wrong as well. According to embedded antenna specialist Ethertronics, the rush to streamline cellular handsets by moving to internal antennas has led to a generation of devices that are not up to their prime function.

And while today's handsets certainly pack in many more features than their predecessors, the radiated output from the current generation of internal antennas is 15-29% lower than the previous generation of handsets with external antennas.

I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.

Alternatively, the full stories behind all the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below.

In the meantime, if you have any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.

Best wishes

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. Collaboration brings speedy route to 150nm ASICs

Oki Electric and UMC have developed an all-new family of ASICs based on UMC's 0.15-micron process. Under the alliance with UMC, Oki Electric will provide its entire portfolio of strategic IP for use in the foundry's Gold IP programme. Customers can access various Oki IP offerings through UMC's Gold IP programme, including the licensed ARM MPU cores and its uPLAT design platform, as well as standard Gold IP offerings such as high-performance ADCs and DACs, serdes, and high-speed I/Os.

2. Rule generator simplifies C-based specification

The AccurateC Rule Generator is the first SystemC-based software that allows designers to create user-defined rules in C/C++ based on project specifications. AccurateC Rule Generator is a companion product to AccurateC Rule Checker introduced in 2001, a SystemC-based language rule checker. Both increase the quality and consistency of the source code, enabling engineers to produce design-ready SystemC code, while promoting reuse for future projects.

3. Signal integrity modelling spots fatal flaws

New from Silicon Metrics, SiliconSmart SI provides cell characterisation and modelling of signal integrity (SI), a critical requirement for complex SoC designs at 130nm and below. The tool, based on Silicon Metrics' industry-leading characterisation technology, is the first of its kind to fully support the noise models of the popular Liberty format. SI analysis tools have been on the market for several years, but because SI issues were not significant problems in 180nm designs, using these tools was considered a luxury.

4. Port expander boosts microcontroller I/O

The MAX7311 is a general-purpose I/O expander that interfaces 16 5V-tolerant input/output ports with microprocessors and microcontrollers through a 400kHz two-wire, SMbus/I2C-compatible serial interface. The MAX7311's INT-bar interrupt output provides a transition detect for I/Os configured as inputs. All 16 ports power up as inputs, but can be configured by the master as either an input or output. Each 5V-tolerant I/O port is capable of sinking up to 43mA and has fixed logic thresholds compatible with 2.5, 3.3 and 5.5V logic levels.

5. Acquisition boards have no shortage of ADCs

Most PCIbus computer boards with multiple analogue input channels use a single overworked A/D convertor and analogue multiplexer. While low in cost, as channel capacity grows, this design exhibits severe restrictions. To avoid the inherent settling delays and speed limitations, Datel's 32-channel PCI-417N series boards for desktop computers uses an A/D convertor for each channel. Besides the obvious increase in total system speed, the PCI-417N samples all channels exactly in parallel at rates up to 80kHz per channel (5.12Mbyte/s aggregate rate).

6. Novel ceramic cuts resonator size and cost

Temex has a new range of ceramics for low-frequency resonator applications from 900MHz to 6GHz. The E6000 series uses a new Temex-developed material that provides the same quality and performance as previous resonators, but in smaller cavities and at lower cost. The E6000 family is aimed at applications such as low noise block convertors for direct broadcast satellite systems, motion/speed radar detectors, dielectric resonant oscillators (DROs) for communication equipment, and microwave filters and sources.

7. Power connectors boast 40A contact rating

GTK has introduced the first 5mm pitch power connector with size 16 contacts to be current rated at up to 40A per contact. The new GPC (Global Power Connector) range is designed to be physically interchangeable and 'intermateable' with US-manufactured industry standard 5mm-pitch connectors of a similar design. The new connectors are designed for use in power supply units for high-current industrial and leisure equipment, uninterruptible power supplies, backplanes and basestations.

8. Placement for small- to mid-size manufacturers

As the number of small- to mid-sized circuit board manufacturers increases, so too does the demand for less expensive component placement equipment with fewer options and capabilities than high-end machines. Vantis is an accurate and reliable placement platform introduced to meet the needs of small- to mid-size consumer electronics, audio-visual equipment, PC and peripheral manufacturers. Vantis is built on the same foundation as Universal's flagship GSM platform.

9. Convertors are cool for wireless basestations

SynQor has released two new industry-standard half-brick sized isolated DC/DC convertors for wireless applications. The modules are part of the PowerQor Tera series and are capable of delivering high output power at 26V (250W) and 18V (165W). The convertor modules employ synchronous rectification and a patented topology to achieve efficiencies of 92% at full load.

10. Baseboard puts embedded modules into PCI systems

Sealevel Systems has been selected to provide baseboard design services for system OEMs using Ampro's EnCore family of embedded processor modules. Sealevel, known for its breadth of I/O and connectivity products, is leveraging its I/O expertise and board-level design capability to speed the deployment of custom EnCore-based designs. Ampro and Sealevel will work together to supply solutions for system companies who prefer the advantages of EnCore's processor-independent modular approach, but wish to outsource the design and production of their application-specific baseboard.
