Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:
The life of an inventor can be a frustrating one. Just imagine: you have a wonderful idea for a product that will change the world. You build a prototype. It works. And then comes the problem: how do you protect your intellectual property?
A patent is the obvious answer, but where do you start? And, more to the point, how do you cover the largest market without making multiple patent applications?
Help may be at hand. After just 30 years of wrangling since the 1973 Munich Convention on the Grant of European Patents, the EU's Competitiveness Council has finally come up with an outline for a European Community Patent.
In line with the 1989 Luxembourg Convention on Community Patents the proposed patent would be valid in all 15 member states, and would clearly remove the need to lodge separate applications - the savings in translations alone would be colossal. Surely this is a highly worthy initiative for the European Union that would put its store ahead of the USA.
But there's the rub. All we have so far is an outline for a European Community Patent. So if you do happen to come up with that "killer" product within the next few years, the US Patent Office can be found online at www.uspto.gov.
I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.
Alternatively, the full stories behind all the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below.
In the meantime, if you have any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best wishes
