Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:

I have always been a big fan of the old adage: "If it ain't busted, it don't need fixing". And so it was with more than a little trepidation that I fired up my browser last week to view the redesigned Electronicstalk website.

But it seems that a website design is really rather like an old and well-loved sports jacket: a few years on and it's still performing its prime function, but the buttons aren't really arranged logically, and in a certain light it starts to look a bit dated.

So all the links in this newsletter will take you to the new Electronicstalk, and we hope you will find it an improvement - both in legibility and in navigation. (Certainly on the first of these, the new design is a lot easier on my tired old eyes).

For me though, the most impressive part of the whole exercise is that Electronicstalk is now some 30-40% "lighter", thanks to all the improvements in HTML coding since our last design. (Which is wonderful news if you - like me - are stuck with dial-up 56Kbit/s Internet access.)

All the feedback so far has been positive - but we'd welcome any constructive criticism that might come to mind.

I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.

Alternatively, the full stories behind all the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below.

In the meantime, if you have any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.

Best wishes

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. Baseband cuts dual-mode terminal power consumption

Innovics Wireless has developed a novel diversity processing solution for next-generation wireless systems, which will significantly reduce the power consumed by dual mode 2.5/3G terminals. By enabling a significant increase in the rate of data download, the Innovics IW7520 reduces the time spent downloading and thereby increases terminal battery life. Implemented in a small silicon area, the Innovics IW7520 device has a low-power architecture that is compliant with 3GPP UMTS (WCDMA), but also compatible with GPRS and GSM standards.

2. Baseband puts new spin on dual-mode 3G handsets

The rapid development of dual mode GSM/GPRS and WCDMA handsets is a significant step closer following the introduction of Zyray Wireless' Spinnerchip 1.0 WCDMA baseband processor solution. Proven to connect to a majority of market-leading GSM/GPRS baseband solutions, Zyray's Spinnerchip 1.0 single chip WCDMA FDD baseband processor began sampling last month. The solution uses a standard memory interface to connect to existing GSM/GPRS baseband processors.

3. Processors aim for home gateways

Intel has released a trio of network processors that address the needs of many wired and wireless applications for the home, SOHO and SME market segments. The new Intel IXP420, IXP421, IXP422 network processors provide developers with a choice of integrated data, voice and security features to meet the requirements of high-performance, cost-sensitive applications. With their Intel XScale core, these processors combine performance headroom to support rich application services with the time-to-market benefits of a common architecture.

4. Speedy oscilloscope board has deep buffers

The UltraFast UF2030 is a full-length PCI board that has two analogue input channels and a maximum sampling rate of 200Msample/s. To enable long signals to be captured even at maximum rates, the UF2030 is supplied with 16Msample of onboard memory that can be expanded to 512Msample without requiring additional PCI slots. A four-channel version is also available. Each analogue input channel contains a separate 8bit A/D convertor to guarantee simultaneous sampling and has seven software selected input ranges from +/-200mV to +/-10V.

5. Convertor sends VGA signals up to 90m

The Mini-CAT is a compact VGA-to-CAT5 convertor for extending PC video signals easily and economically. The Model UV1 comprises two pieces: a sender that plugs directly to the PC or notebook and a receiver that connects to the display device such as monitor or LCD projector. The user just plugs a standard CAT5 cable, up to 90m long, between the two units. The devices buffer and boost the video signals with a bandwidth of 250MHz for a crisp and clear image. All signals are transmitted and received differentially, eliminating ground-loop and AC-grounding problems that can often arise in sending video over an extended length.

6. Fuel gauge IC provides feedback on battery runtime

Texas Instruments has developed the industry's first fully integrated battery fuel gauge for single-cell lithium-ion and lithium-polymer battery packs to calculate remaining battery capacity and system runtime. The new integrated chip significantly reduces the development time and total cost of implementing a comprehensive battery fuel gauge system in single-cell portable applications.

7. Flash MCU cuts out external memory

Toshiba reckons its latest high-speed low-voltage 8bit MCU has enough onboard Flash memory to eliminate external memory requirements in portable, battery-powered applications such as personal audio equipment. By offering 512byte of built-in NAND-type Flash, the new TMP86FM48U/F microcontroller allows designers to minimise component count and simplify board layout. In addition, the availability of onboard Flash memory provides the flexibility for post-production software programming that can be used to address low-volume, custom requirements.

8. CFD software takes on embedded mesh technology

Daat Research Corp is claiming a breakthrough in accuracy and calculating speed for engineers performing thermal and flow analysis on electronic systems and subsystems. With the release of Coolit v5.0, Daat Research becomes the first CFD company to successfully incorporate embedded mesh technology. This pioneering approach eliminates dependence on approximate model building techniques, such as resistor networks and lumped parameter (compact) models, thereby simplifying model building while increasing model fidelity and accuracy and delivering order of magnitude increases in calculation speed.

9. One controller handles all 3G network signalling

The new ATMII-PMC protocol controller from Adax can perform all 3G network signalling functions. Using the same board throughout the network allows 3G network designers to reduce costs as common interfaces (APIs) can be used to ease and speed application development, service deployment and also reduce support costs. In addition, the board's high performance makes the applications more efficient, thereby lowering the hardware investment. The ATMII-PMC adds the ability to provide AAL2 support for the radio network (RN) portion of 3G networks (RNC to Node B).

10. Deep micro-vias available on large-format PCBs

Teradyne can now provide deep micro-via technology for customers of high-performance printed circuits (HPCs). As package density and technology drive the need for greater density on the printed circuit board, deep micro-via technology provides several benefits to printed circuit board designers. Teradyne's unique HDI capabilities include panel sizes up to 24 x 28in and micro-vias three layers deep or 3mil in diameter. By providing circuit designers with less manufacturing barriers, system costs can be reduced, along with layer count, by as much as 20%.
