Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:

Readers of this column two weeks ago should not be surprised at the level of activity at the 3GSM World Congress in Cannes this week. Although I must admit to being a little unprepared for the sheer weight of material arriving hourly in my inbox.

Today is even a record day for Electronicstalk, with a whopping 47 new stories added to the site, all fresh, and a significant proportion originating from a venue formerly better known for films, topless bathing and extortionate coffee.

Regular readers will appreciate that we have no truck with end-user kit (such as new handsets and the like) unless it involves a novel application or two. This has its plusses and minuses. On the one hand, this means that there's no way your boss can accuse you of "casual reading" if you are caught with Electronicstalk on your screen. But on the other hand, it severely limits the number of "freebies" that are sent to our offices "for evaluation purposes".

But that doesn't usually stop such companies from trying to convince us of how important their news actually is to the electronics engineering community as a whole. "Your readers could use this for their work", they'll claim. At this point we usually remind them that you folks also drive cars, write with pencils and even eat food to help you in your work… but we won't be covering the latest developments in these fields on our site either.

But I digress. The crux of the matter is that, as predicted a couple of weeks ago, the component manufacturers have succeeded in hijacking the GSM market for their own ends - or the 3GSM World Congress at least (www.3gsmworldcongress.com). And with companies of the stature of Philips, Intel and National all staking their claims in markets already exploited by the likes of Hitachi, Analog Devices and Motorola, there is little wonder at the information deluge that ensues. So who's got time to read about handsets anyway.

I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.

Alternatively, the full stories behind all the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below.

In the meantime, if you have any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.

Best wishes

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. EM modelling package gains SAR capabilities

Mobile phone manufacturers can now ensure their new devices meet Government RF guidelines before they build a physical prototype thanks to the latest version of the Micro-Stripes 3D-EM modelling and antenna design package from Flomerics. By integrating a full database describing the electrical properties of human tissues as full frequency dependent models, Micro-Stripes 6.1 is able to accurately simulate specific absorption rates (SAR) of electromagnetic (EM) radiation within the brain emitted by GSM mobile phones.

2. Graphics LCD is drop-in upgrade

Although commonly used in industrial instrumentation and control applications, a 40-character 2-line display is limited in the amount of information it can deliver by the character size and selection provided by the onboard controller. As users demand more and more feedback, Densitron has come up with the answer - the DV240x18-6613. By redesigning the display layout and enhancing the electronics, this display is a drop-in replacement solution with a fully programmable graphic array.

3. Plug-and-play configuration for basestation amps

Philips has developed a new concept for Edge GSM basestation design that allows manufacturers to produce a single RF power amplifier chassis that they can customise to operate in the 800, 900, 1800 or 1900MHz bands simply by plugging in appropriate RF driver modules and power transistors. By eliminating the need to design a separate amplifier assembly for each band, it simplifies component inventory and logistics and reduces manufacturing costs.

4. Programme lowers the ASIC entry bar

Minimum fabrication costs have been reduced by a factor of up to 10, under a new programme, launched under the Europractice IC Service. mi[-email removed-]l enable universities and research laboratories worldwide to fabricate very small designs at a cost of a few hundred Euros. IMEC offers access to ASIC technologies through the Europractice IC service. As well as low-cost entry to technologies and support, the IC service provides cell library distribution, backend design support, prototyping and volume production including multiproject wafers (MPWs), and volume production runs in different technologies at AMI Semiconductor BVBA Belgium (AMIS).

5. MCUs raise the bar for 8bit systems

Zilog's new high-performance eZ80Acclaim! 8bit microcontroller family features up to 256Kbyte of reprogrammable Flash memory, Ethernet MAC and TCP/IP protocols and a complete design kit. Designed for cost-sensitive, high-performance applications, the family includes an optimised, power-efficient pipelined architecture with an upgraded Z80 core and an enhanced instruction set, and builds on the momentum generated by Zilog's Z8Encore! product family announced in November 2002. The new three-member product family features the eZ80Acclaim! F91 microcontroller, which includes a clock speed of up to 50MHz, the ability to address 16Mbyte of address space, and perform 24bit integer arithmetic.

6. Triple-band module cuts handset RF down to size

Hitachi is claiming the world's smallest, complete triple-band RF subsystem for GSM handsets. The Micro Advanced Radio Solution (MARS) module boasts a tiny footprint of 180mm2 and is compatible with most GSM baseband solutions. It provides handset manufacturers with a cost-effective and easy-to-use RF system, enabling them to focus expertise on developing other value-added features. The module is being demonstrated at this week's 3GSM World Congress in Cannes.

9. Novel LC mixtures keep displays on

ZBD Displays has developed novel advanced LC mixtures for use with its grating aligned zenithal bistable displays. The breakthrough was achieved through a joint development program with Merck KGaA, the world's leading supplier of liquid crystal (LC) mixtures for flat panel displays, initiated by the companies 18 months ago. Backed by an extensive patent portfolio, ZBD's display technology allows images to be kept on a display indefinitely without the use of any power and without image degradation, even under severe mechanical stresses.

10. Convertors distribute efficiently from a 5V bus

Datel's new LSN D5 series SIPs are nonisolated DC/DC convertors that accept 5V inputs (4.5-5.5V input range) and deliver 1, 1.2, 1.5, 1.8, 2, 2.5 and 3.3V outputs fully rated at 10A. The LSN's single-inline packages (2 x 0.5x 0.34in) can be configured in either vertical or horizontal orientations. The former occupies a mere 0.7in2. The latter is a mere 0.34in high. LSN D5s are true plug-and-play power convertors enabling power-system architects to configure solutions in minutes. In most applications, LSNs require no external I/O filtering to achieve either specified noise levels or FCC-compliant radiated/conducted emissions.
