Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:
How's that for timing? The Cricket World Cup has just got under way in Africa and the Electronicstalk Newsletter brings up an unbeaten century of issues.
No doubt in the coming weeks, there will be many debates on TV and radio (to say nothing of clubs and pubs) on the merits of using technology to help officials to adjudicate in sporting events.
Many sports over the years have embraced technology, whether it be the now ubiquitous "Cyclops" line judge in tennis or the video referees used in gridiron, rugby league and the like.
But cricket has always been somewhat more tentative in its adoption of technology.
The purist would argue that the game has survived for long enough without technology, and that the game should be the same wherever it is played - be it Lords or Clapham Common.
However, video evidence is now an established part of international cricket, and TV commentators can make use of audio, video and even radar evidence to demonstrate just how right or wrong the umpire's decision was anyway.
At the risk of being lynched for heresy, surely the answer is to do away with the human factor entirely. Technology alone is quite capable of judging every aspect of the game of cricket, whether it be no balls, wides, LBW, or the faintest of edges to the slips. What's more, technology is both consistent and impartial (and doesn't need to stand on one leg when the score reaches a magic number).
Here, surely, is a wonderful opportunity for British manufacturing. The market for the robot umpire would span the globe… and it would probably only need a change of firmware to be adaptable for other sports, such as rounders and baseball.
No doubt the prototype will be available for testing around about the time that England win the World Cup and pigs are seen flying over Lords.
I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.
Alternatively, the full stories behind all the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below.
In the meantime, if you have any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best wishes
