Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:

Our site today - and I guess for the next couple of weeks - is dominated by some of the major component and subsystem previews ahead of the 3GSM World Congress in Cannes (17th-21st February 2003). For while telecomms equipment manufacturers may be in difficulties, a significant proportion of the electronics industry as a whole is chasing what we are led to believe is an ever-diminishing market.

Alcatel has just reported its seventh consecutive losing quarter, and layoffs abound throughout the business. (Even the formerly immensely profitable magazines serving the sector have ceased printing because of the drying up of advertising revenue.)

Interestingly enough, though, the 3GSM World Congress itself (www.3gsmworldcongress.com) seems to go from strength to strength - both as a valuable industry focus and as a money-making exercise for its organisers.

The contrast between the fortunes of the technology and the parlous state of many of the companies that have championed its development has not been inevitable. But the migration of the technology from the traditional handset into other market sectors was predicted more than a decade ago by the very component suppliers who have ridden the GSM wave.

The handset manufacturers may have begun the GSM revolution, but it was the chipset makers who first appreciated the potential for ever-increasing volumes business from outside the Handset market.

Today, an OEM can GSM-enable a product by choosing from a variety of standard modules, many additionally incorporating GPS. Later this year those module designs will begin to migrate to the SoC level.

All of this must make GSM appear a rather cruel mistress to the telecomms manufacturers. While they fund the electronics business in developing the latest 3G designs, that same electronics industry is making far greater gains from plain old "vanilla" GSM.

I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.

Alternatively, the full stories behind all the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below.

In the meantime, if you have any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.

2. Second generation FireWire goes further and faster

Consumer, computing and audio/video applications can now reach higher speeds and greater distances with the industry's first available 1394b (FireWire) devices from Texas Instruments. The TSB81BA3 is a three-port bilingual physical layer device capable of speeds up to 800Mbit/s, compliant with the approved version of the IEEE1394b specification. This first to be announced IEEE1394b PHY not only doubles the speed of previous generation 1394a PHYs to 800Mbit/s but also increases communication distances up to 100m.

3. More dynamic reconfigurability for analogue arrays

The latest version of the AnadigmDesigner2 EDA software includes a breakthrough feature that greatly expands the ability of field-programmable analogue arrays (FPAAs) to be reconfigured on the fly in embedded systems. The software's new state-driven dynamic configurability (SDDC) capability widens the scope of dynamic reconfigurability to allow both algorithmic updates of circuit parameters and - in an industry first - state-driven transformations of the FPAA's functionality.

5. RF power sensor provides linear output

Featuring a linear response, the Smartload sensor is ideal for determining RF power levels regardless of waveform simply by measuring true RMS power. The device is a passive temperature-compensated thick-film integrated circuit, and its small size of only 97mm2 (on alumina substrate) makes it suitable for use in surface mounting processes. The passive nature of SmartLoad allows for a highly linear response over a wide dynamic range. The circuit operates on a single 5V DC power supply and only draws 10mA nominally.
