Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:

We at Electronicstalk (and indeed all Pro-Talk sites) like to think ourselves pretty fastidious in our maintenance of the English language. The material published on our sites arrives from a variety of sources around the world, and in various "flavours" of English.

Part of our added value is in publishing such a volume of important stories. And part is in editing this material into a consistent and practical format, or "style", so that (in theory) you the readers believe that everything on the site was written (in effect) by the same person.

This is not unique. For example, wherever you may be, your daily newspaper will almost certainly be edited in line with its own "house style" manual, making the language and its tone consistent throughout.

So this weekend it was with great interest that I examined a style manual from a rival Internet publishing house which (like ourselves) is addressing the limitations of mailing out a series of text-based weekly e-mail newsletters.

Sure enough, there were the usual warnings to avoid the use of nonstandard characters such as the Greek mu for micro and omega for ohms. But this manual had an additional recommendation which ran counter to all my years in publishing. And again it is the limitations of technology that are to blame.

Throughout this site you will find that prefixes and suffixes that are not words in themselves are (quite naturally) joined directly to other words to form compound words. Let's face it, it would be non-sensical and in-efficient not to do so (see what I mean).

But this pirated style sheet was very clear in its assertion that compound words should be unbound as it removes the danger of mispronunciation by text-to-speech programs.

Now, the day that all engineers have their e-mails read to them is probably still a long way off, and by then (hopefully) the algorithms will be capable of dealing with complex technical English. But it would appear that I must apologise to all those of you whose enjoyment of the Electronic Stalk New Sletter has been spoilt by the inaccurate pronunciation of your technology. Your (Tommy) cooperation is appreciated.

I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.

Alternatively, the full stories behind all the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by e-mail alone: see details below.

In the meantime, if you have any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.

Best wishes

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. SoC cores take over DSP roles

The Pro Series family of processor cores allows users to optimise their cores for specific applications while maintaining compatibility with the MIPS industry standard architecture. This new capability is offered through the CorExtend feature of MIPS Technologies' Pro Series cores, which is in support of the company's strategy to give its customers the performance to create highly differentiated products. Pro Series cores enable SoC designers to significantly increase application performance without sacrificing the benefits of its extensive toolsets, software and infrastructure.

2. Selectable crossover cuts amplifier distortion

Analog Devices has released the first device in a new family of high-performance amplifiers with rail-to-rail inputs and outputs that work on supply voltages down to 2.7V. The AD8027 features high bandwidth (180MHz at unity gain), and 100V/us slew rate. Low distortion over the entire input range is the most novel feature of the AD8027. While all amplifiers with rail-to-rail inputs have an input stage that switches from one differential pair to another as the input signal crosses the threshold voltage, the AD8027 has a "selectable crossover" feature that allows that threshold to be selected - close to either the positive or negative rail - at the designer's discretion, minimising the effects of crossover distortion.

3. Transceiver cuts the cost of high-speed USB links

Cypress Semiconductor has released its EZ-USB TX2 transceiver (CY7C68000) for just $1.00 in volumes of 100,000 units. EZ-USB TX2 is a stand-alone high-speed USB 2.0 transceiver that is compliant with the USB 2.0 transceiver macrocell interface (UTMI) specification. This device includes an 8 or 16bit interface for applications such as scanners, printers, digital camcorders, and digital still cameras. For designers who are well along their integration curve and want only the transceiver to be external to their ASIC, the TX2 provides a hi-speed physical layer interface that operates at the maximum allowable USB 2.0 bandwidth.

8. In-system programmable devices come to handhelds

Lattice Semiconductor reckons its 1.8V ispMACH 4000Z CPLD family that sets a new standard for the industry's lowest static power consumption. The ispMACH 4032Z device is the first of three initial ispMACH 4000Z devices which span logic capacities from 32 to 128 macrocells. These breakthrough devices provide extremely low static current consumption (20uA worst case for a 32 macrocell device) and cost effective logic implementation demanded by handheld and portable applications. By reducing static power consumption to only 20% of previous devices, the new family dramatically expands the application scope of programmable logic in the portable and handheld arenas.

10. Multiband cellular transceiver mops up 60 parts

Zarlink Semiconductor has unveiled the world's first off-the-shelf, single-chip radio transceiver for cellphones used in multiband, multimode, 2G and 2.5G digital cellular networks. Zarlink's ZLTM20250 chip - the industry's smallest and most flexible commercial radio transceiver - is targeted primarily at handsets for GAIT overlay networks that add GSM capability and mobile Internet data services to existing TDMA/AMPS wireless infrastructure. Multimode GAIT cellular networks are being deployed extensively across North America. Zarlink's new transceiver eliminates about 60 separate components from GAIT cellphones, shrinking the size of the radio by more than half, and reducing bill of materials costs by up to 40%.
