Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:
Regular readers of this column will know that I am a strong advocate of recycling. Let's face it, if anything leaving my household has a better use than incineration or landfill, then it deserves to be put to that use.
And fortunately I am not alone. Even the formerly profligate UK public has begun to embrace recycling in all its forms, whether it be wine bottles, supermarket carrier bags or newspapers. And now the education process has begun to encourage proper recycling of waste electrical and electronics equipment.
So we could rather do without this week's story of the two Massachusetts Institute of Technology graduate students who managed to garner significant quantities of potentially sensitive data from a bunch of hard disc drives they purchased on eBay. The most worrying instance concerned a drive from an old bank ATM, but the story has probably set alarm bells ringing for anyone who feels there might be something sensitive (or embarrassing) on their hard drive.
Revealing such information is not rocket science. Disaster recovery consultancies abound, and there are many freely available commercial, shareware and freeware packages designed to help negligent users recover accidentally deleted (or formatted) information.
But, by the same token, there are almost as many packages now available to enable users to cover their tracks and render deleted information unreadable to all but the most determined "gleaner".
So I'll be hoping that not too many people take the advice of one "expert" who has been widely quoted this week as saying that the safest way to safeguard discarded hard disc drives is to take a mallet to them.
I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.
Alternatively, the full stories behind all the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below.
In the meantime, if you have any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best wishes

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. Analogue switch adds a free throw
Fairchild has developed the industry's first single-pole/triple-throw (SP3T) CMOS analogue switch. The revolutionary new FSA3357 device provides significant benefits for designers of handheld devices, mobile phones, MP3 players, PDAs, notebooks and other portable electronics devices. Replacing two (in series) single-pole/double-throw (SPDT) components with a single 3:1 mux FSA3357 device lowers part count by 50%, provides superior utilisation of PCB real estate, preserves signal integrity and reduces equivalent component pick-and-place operations by half.

6. Study to address switch to lead-free solder
The Reliability and Failure Analysis Group of ERA Technology has received support from the ERA Foundation to carry out a survey to determine the state of readiness of UK industry for the transition from traditional tin/lead to alternative lead-free solders. The EU is banning the sale of products containing lead-based solders from 1st July 2006. This may seem a long way off, but there are no existing satisfactory lead-free solders that could be used as a straight replacement. That means manufacturing techniques will have to be adapted, and in some cases, different components used.
