Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:

As a child, I was extremely fortunate to be able to visit the Brighton International Toy Fair on a number of occasions. (Well, it did help to have a grandmother who ran a toyshop.)

Since those heady days of the late 1960s, I have attended trade shows on three continents, and I would have to admit that my love of exhibitions has somewhat diminished. But I guess that the adult equivalent of my boyhood treat would be the International Consumer Electronics Show, held last weekend in Las Vegas.

Sadly, though, a trip to Las Vegas is a little beyond the budget of Electronicstalk at the moment, and so I have had to content myself with a darned good rummage through the show's official website at www.cesweb.org, and that of its organiser, the Consumer Electronics Association, at www.ce.org.

Aside from the obvious roundup of the latest gadgets, two snippets caught my eye. First, the CEA's forecast for 2003, which sees the market for consumer electronic equipment growing by a mere 3.5% to a new high of $99.5 billion. And while this level of growth may not be exciting in itself, the breakdown behind the overall numbers makes very interesting reading. For while there are plenty of new technology areas such as DVD recorders, MP3 players etc that are forecast for substantial double-digit growth, several of the old stalwart product sectors are forecast to decline sharply.

The second highlight was the inclusion of what was billed as "Green Saturday" - and which included a conference devoted to issues such as recycling of consumer electronic equipment and trends towards energy-efficient equipment.

Not surprisingly, though, it is the gadgets that have made the headlines, and a number of items have already featured on the Electronicstalk website, and appear below. However, the CEA does deserve to be congratulated for attempting to bring green issues to the fore.

I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.

Alternatively, the full stories behind all the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below.

In the meantime, if you have any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.

Best wishes

1. Echo cancellation solution ported to DSP

A complete DSP-based echo cancellation solution based on TI's TMS320C5441 device and Telinnovation echo cancellation software is now available from Texas Instruments following the company's acquisition of Ditech's Telinnovation Echo Cancellation Software Unit in April 2002. For telecommunications carriers developing packet-based voice transmission systems, the Telinnovation high-capacity echo canceller has long been recognised as the industry benchmark for DSP-based voice enhancement and echo cancellation.

3. No royalties for ARM9 embedded development

ARC International has developed a highly optimised suite of software development tools for the ARM9 processor. The suite, called the MetaDeveloper, includes ARC's MetaWare C/C++ compiler, SeeCode debugger, instruction set simulator, assembler, linker, profiler, RTOS and networking application prototyping, IDE and Precise/MQX RTOS and Precise/RTCS TCP/IP networking stacks. Using ARC's unified development tools allows developers using the ARM9 processor to eliminate the time and risk of working with multiple vendors, thus enabling them to bring products to market more quickly.

4. New telecomms architecture to free up PCIbus

Motorola Computer Group is one of a group of industry-leading communications platform and component providers behind the Compact Telecommunications Computing Architecture initiative, or "CompactTCA". The objective of the proposal is to clearly define an embedded system platform specification, which combines several existing CompactPCI specifications from the PCI Industrial Computer Manufacturers Group (PICMG) into a single standard. Sponsor companies for the CompactTCA initiative include Force Computers, Motorola Computer Group, Performance Technologies, Pigeon Point Systems, StarGen and ZNYX Networks.

5. Materials tester switches to cables and wires

Lloyd Instruments has developed a cost effective testing system specifically to test electrical cables, insulated wires and switches such as keypads on mobile phones and membrane switches. The device consists of a precision-engineered multifunction testing unit used for testing electrical switch contact resistance, the crushability of core cable, and the compressibility of insulated wires. It is designed to measure any interruption in the flow of electrical current in the cable, wire or switch sample when subjected to compressive forces applied by a materials testing system.

6. Instrumentation amp cuts out interference

The AD8221 instrumentation amplifier provides the highest CMR (common-mode rejection) over frequency of any instrumentation amplifier available in an MSOP package, which is half the size of a traditional SOIC package. CMR is the most important attribute of an instrumentation amplifier, and the AD8221 provides breakthrough performance of 90dB (at unity gain) to 10kHz. Also, the CMR of the device improves as the gain increases.
