Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:

Welcome to 2003 - or at least to the first Electronicstalk Newsletter of 2003. This is a slightly larger than usual issue, bringing you the highlights of the past three weeks.

Unfortunately the year has already drawn its fair share of bad news with the publishing of Japanese research claiming a high risk of mental instability for anyone who uses a computer for more than five hours per day. Mind you, if you're one of those people (like me) who thought the report was aimed specifically at them, then you're probably just being paranoid.

But all this pales into insignificance with the news that the BBC has axed that doyen of populist science and technology, Tomorrow's World.

For almost 40 years, the programme has provided highly laudable non-commercial coverage of gadgets and technologies years before their commercial success, and no doubt has inspired many a youth towards a career in electrotechnology. (Until now.)

For many inventors, TW has provided the exposure needed to bring their ideas to commercial fruition. But at the same time, the show's non-commercial policies have provided headaches for many a marketing man.

(A former colleague of mine was crestfallen when returning to the office after a TW filming session of a product developed by one of his clients. Having worked hard to get the product included on the show, he was unable to prevent the production crew from masking out every instance of his client's logo from the product.)

The Tomorrow's World "brand" is set to continue with a range of new shows. We can only hope they retain the benefits of their predecessor.

I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.

Alternatively, the full stories behind all the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below.

In the meantime, if you have any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.

Best wishes

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. Folded capacitors redouble embedded SRAM density

MoSys has released its 1T-SRAM-Q (quad density) technology which it reckons achieves four times the density of traditional SRAMs. This addition to the 1T-SRAM technology addresses the industry's need for increasing memory density. The market demands for lower power in consumer products and greater bandwidth in high performance products are driving the need for more on-chip memory. By combining MoSys' proven 1T-SRAM technology with its new folded area capacitor (FAC), the company has created the solution with 1T-SRAM-Q technology, doubling the density of 1T-SRAM memory.

2. Bricks provide scalable power building blocks

Increased pressure to reduce costs, smaller production runs and the need for shorter time-to-market means power architects are seeking alternatives to the traditional approach of a unique, individual power supply for each different high power DC requirement. Advanced Power Conversion has responded to this challenge by offering a component based approach that provides a very simple, quick and totally scalable solution for distributed and modular power systems. Using modules from the APC range of 500 or 200W industry-standard-size full-brick DC/DC convertors (117 x 61 x 12.7mm) which require just a single wire to connect the units in parallel, total output power can very easily expanded by simply adding extra modules.

3. DSP-based acquisition runs desktop or embedded

The Model BVR-32 is Dalanco Spry's newest offering for DSP and data acquisition applications. This PCIbus board may be used in both desktop and embedded environments. It is based on the 60MHz Texas Instruments TMS320C32 DSP with 512Kbyte of SRAM. A four-channel high-speed A/D convertor (6MHz, 12bit), dual-channel D/A convertor (25MHz+, 12bit), and a digital data connector form the I/O portion. The digital data connector may be connected directly to an IDE hard drive for high-speed data acquisition applications.

4. Verification focuses on telecomms SoCs

Telecom Workbench is a new product that addresses functional and conformance verification of multistandard SoCs. Telecom Workbench combines support for multiple broadband protocols such as Internet protocol (IP) and ATM, with support for the next generation of Sonet/SDH standards by adding features that address virtual concatenation, LCAS and GFP. By integrating conformance testing within the functional verification environment early in the design cycle, Telecom Workbench provides designers of modern networking chips with powerful diagnostic capabilities for validating standards interoperability that are traditionally available in the lab only after silicon has been produced.

5. Program checks wireless interoperability

Cambridge-based Commsonic has released the first in a range of free and low-cost simulation and verification tools aimed at developers of SoCs and broadband communications systems. TestiPHY(802.16) is a Matlab program that generates COFDM modulation waveforms according to the new IEEE Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) Standard 802.16a. The current release of the tool is compliant with revision D6 of the standard but it will be updated to track changes to the protocol as they emerge.

6. Speedy route to Bluetooth designs

Integrated Circuit Solution has developed a Bluetooth USB dongle reference design that allows electronic devices to become Bluetooth-enabled. This reference design will be of great help to its customers who do not have Bluetooth technology backgrounds for this wireless market. The ICSI low-cost high-performance Bluetooth USB dongle reference design is based on ICSI's IC9000, a highly integrated point-to-multipoint Bluetooth solution, that combines USB plug-and-play and embedded Bluetooth functionality, is a solution for the user to easily address those "addon" products such as desktops, laptops and a variety of peripherals with USB host ports to have Bluetooth capabilities by linking with this Bluetooth USB dongle.

7. Direct digital synthesis on a tenth of the power

Analog Devices has a new family of direct digital synthesisers that deliver a 400MHz clock speed at one-tenth the power consumption of previous solutions. This now enables designers to use DDS for fast frequency hopping at higher output frequencies in more power-sensitive applications. The new DDS devices are the first in the industry to clock at 400Msample/s and synthesise frequencies of up to 160MHz while dissipating less than 200mW of power.

8. Panther provides silent solution

JMC Products describes its Panther range as the latest in ultraquiet DC fan design. In traditional fans, the most dominant acoustic noise is due to the fan's motor switching noise. The Panther fans operate at switching levels above 20kHz, a much higher frequency level, producing a soft commutation that results in a quiet operation that is above the audible range for human hearing.

9. Directional antennas answer 2.4GHz congestion

Two new basestation sector antennas provide wireless ISPs with a high quality alternative to omnidirectional devices. The two new models for the SEC series offer 180-degree beamwidth for the unlicensed ISM band at 2.4 to 2.5GHz. The transition from an omni antenna to a sector at the basestation is a sound technical move, as the unlicensed band at 2.4GHz is becoming more and more prone to interference issues.

10. Digital scopes run engine combustion analysis

An engine combustion analysis package for use with Yokogawa's digital oscilloscopes and data-acquisition systems is now available from Yokogawa Martron. The new software package enables engine combustion pressures to be analysed for engines using a variety of fuels, with versions available for both gasoline and natural-gas engines. The natural-gas analysis package can be used to analyse specific heat ratio and polytrol index.
