Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:
That just about wraps it up for 2002, a year that has seen the usual level of change to both the world in general and our to industry. Whether those changes are for better or for worse, only history will tell.
At one end, Microsoft has survived intact, while at the other Marconi has managed to become a shadow of its former shadow. It may be scant comfort for those who have made an "involuntary career change" this year, but every phoenix needs its ashes from which to rise.
From our own point of view, the electronics publishing world has lost some of its oldest established names - both in terms of titles and personnel. Meanwhile, Electronicstalk survives, and has big plans for the new year.
This, then, is the last Electronicstalk Newsletter of 2002. However, we will continue to update the site throughout the holiday period with the latest news as and when it happens.
Our next newsletter will hit your inboxes on Tuesday 7th January 2003. So it only remains for me to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
Best wishes
Laurence Marchini, Editor

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. Bluetooth baseband hops on to new standard
NewLogic's Boost Bluetooth solution can now offer support for adaptive frequency hopping (AFH). A rapidly increasing number of devices such as Bluetooth and 802.11b communicate using the 2.4GHz ISM band. It will therefore become increasingly important to ensure that devices using the ISM band are able to maintain a high quality of service in the presence of other devices using the same band. Adaptive frequency hopping (AFH) is a technique currently in the process of being specified by the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) as a means of helping to ensure Bluetooth devices provide a high quality of service and that other products using the same band, in particular 802.11b systems, maintain reliable communications.

2. New life for old ASICs and FPGAs
Micro Circuit Engineering (MCE) is providing designers with an opportunity to upgrade obsolete ASICs or FPGAs by adding a second IC attached to the replicated old component. The system is likely to be of particular use in applications where additional functionality needs to be added to an existing 'long lifetime' system during an uprating or refurbishment exercise. This is common in military and industrial hardware which needs to be retained in service with enhanced electronics.

3. Free package evaluates VHDL-AMS modelling language
Simplorer SV version 6 is a free downloadable version of Ansoft's mixed-domain systems design software. The tool is rapidly being adopted within the automotive, aerospace, and electric-drive industries. Simplorer SV, originally created to give professors and students access to a professional-grade design tool, has become a popular method for industry engineers to evaluate Simplorer's capabilities and to solve small-scale problems.

4. Revolutionary claims for novel antenna design
Antenova has developed a novel type of antenna that liberates wireless developers from the problems and restrictions associated with conventional technology. The new freedom made possible by the introduction amounts to a revolutionary force for wireless terminal and infrastructure designers. The technology results from over three years of pioneering R and D that has transformed the effect of high dielectric antennas (HDAs) from scientific curiosity into completely characterised technology - backed by a design methodology and computer-aided tools.

5. Silicon microlens promises reduced-cost optos
Oki Electric reckons it has developed the world's smallest silicon-based microlens, allowing for mass-production of high-performance optical components at low cost for the metro and access-network markets. This microlens improves the performance of optical components, as it can be used for surface-mount technology (SMT), a popular method for the mass-production of low-end optical components at low cost. The cost of the microlens itself is also reduced more than tenfold, as it is produced using LSI fabrication technology.

6. Top density for speedy burst SRAMs
Cypress is sampling its 72Mbit NoBL (No Bus Latency) burst family of SRAMs optimised for networking applications operating at OC-48 speeds (2.5Gbit/s) and above. The new devices have been codeveloped with Ramtron subsidiary Enhanced Memory Systems using a patented one-transistor (1T) enhanced SRAM (ESRAM) technology to achieve the same speed, four to eight times higher density and four times lower power than traditional six-transistor sync SRAMs. NoBL SRAMs have an architecture optimised for the most demanding high-speed applications requiring maximum bus bandwidth.

7. 10Gbit system for space-constrained I/O
Molex has released an XPAK form factor solution for 10 Gigabit I/O applications. The XPAK system consists of an XLink 10 Gigabit optical transponder, guide system, and 70-pin XAUI host connector. This new solution is ideally suited to applications where board space and size is critical. The new devices have been specifically designed to the XPAK multisource agreement (MSA) and the first products have been developed for applications where low profile is a key specification requirement. All the modules have a maximum profile of 9.8mm and are PCI compliant.

8. Powerful embedded solution for low-level control
The TE486 is a new entry-level embedded controller board from DSP Design. Based on the STPC Elite 486-level x86 processor operating at up to 133MHz and including a maths coprocessor for fast number crunching, the TE486 provides a simple yet powerful solution to less demanding embedded computing problems. It supports a wide range of peripherals making it a highly practical solution for many applications and as it is pin compatible with all other boards from DSP Design provides an inexpensive upgrade path.

9. DSP modules gain IP link to cameras
Hunt Engineering has added support for the Camera Link interface to its FPGA based Heron modules. Camera Link is a standard communication interface that was specifically developed by camera and frame-grabber manufacturers for use with vision applications and is widely supported throughout the industry. By providing intellectual property (IP) for the FPGA modules, Camera Link area scan cameras can be connected to a Heron DSP system without the need for an interface customised to a specific camera.

10. Optical distribution frame controls fibre bends
LISA (leading interconnect systems approach) is a new optical distribution frame (ODF) from Huber+Suhner, designed from the outset to handle systems working at 1625nm in the X band. The system includes a new high-density cassette that can house double the number of fibres and has been engineered to facilitate easy installation, saving time and reducing costs. As wavelengths increase, managing bend radii in systems becomes more and more important. While other existing ODFs can be modified to accommodate 1625nm systems, Huber+Suhner claims they are not rugged or reliable at this wavelength, causing system performance compromises.
