Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:

Good news, it seems, is infectious. I have to admit to having felt a pleasant, warm, almost Christmas-like glow at the positive responses to last week's editorial (including one from a Government spin doctor).

But after the doom and gloom of the last 15 months there suddenly seems to be more good news than bad.

I may be clutching at the proverbial straws, but when some of the real "barometer" companies of the components industry such as Intel and National start talking recovery I'm tempted to crack open a bottle and celebrate.

And when the latest survey from the organisers of the much-maligned Nepcon show (see below) shows the UK electronics manufacturing sector moving in the right direction, I'm inclined to check whether I have enough stocks of hangover cure.

As we've seen time and time again, technology alone is not enough to move the national or the global economy from decline into growth. The real key to the equation is business confidence - that all-elusive "feelgood" factor.

So while it may be premature to celebrate a recovery, talking about it really doesn't do any harm. Now… where's that corkscrew?

I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.

Alternatively, the full stories behind all the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below.

In the meantime, if you have any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.

Best wishes

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. Big two shrink CMOS process to 65nm

Toshiba and Sony have codeveloped the world's first 65nm CMOS process technology for embedded DRAM system LSIs - a major breakthrough in process technology for highly advanced, compact, single-chip system LSIs that will be only one-quarter the size of current devices while offering higher levels of performance and functionality. The new process technology announced by Toshiba and Sony and integration to a new level that allows bandwidths to be scaled up and the maximisation of system performance.

2. Kit turns DSPs to power management tasks

Texas Instruments has developed a novel digital signal processing (DSP) approach for the rapidly growing power management market. Stemming from growth, the power management market is experiencing increased system complexity, cost-pressures, time-to-market constraints and a need for more feature-rich applications, placing added pressures on power supply designers. Responding to designers' needs, TI has developed a robust, easy-to-use DSP-based solution that provides added flexibility, intelligence and substantial value to applications while meeting the required performance to operate and manage digital power supplies.

3. Tool speeds timing signoff for nanometer ICs

Critic is a full-chip critical timing simulator from Nassda designed for rapid post-layout analysis of cell-based digital ICs, including their associated clock networks. Critic complements traditional static timing analysis verification methods with fast, accurate analysis of timing performance of circuits targeted for nanometer process technologies at 130nm and below. Nassda believes Critic is the first EDA tool able to automatically provide accurate analysis of nanometer effects on critical signal paths and clock networks for complex, high-performance digital ICs, comprising millions of gates and developed with customer-owned tooling (COT) flows.

4. Mezzanine card provides eight serial lines

The PMC-SIO is an octal serial I/O PCI mezzanine card (PMC) with eight ports supporting a mixture of synchronous and asynchronous protocols. The PMC-SIO's eight serial I/O ports have a well balanced mixture of a quad enhanced serial communication controller (ESCC) and a quad universal asynchronous receiver transmitter (UART) equipped with the most commonly used EIA232 or EIA422/485 interfaces. The PMC-SIO is ideal for applications requiring extensive serial input/output for the management and monitoring of peripherals.

5. Nonisolated SIP convertors boost efficiency

NiQor series DC/DC convertors can deliver up to 20A of total output current in an industry standard single-inline package. The new line of nonisolated point-of-load convertors represents SynQor expanding product line for distributed power applications. The first modules introduced in the NiQor nonisolated line have a 3.0-5.5V input range and deliver up to 20A at 3.3, 2.5, 1.8, 1.5, 1.2 and 0.9V. Employing the industry standard SIP, the units measure 50.8 x 14 x 8.5mm, and can be configured in either vertical or horizontal orientations.

6. Speedy answer to GPRS handset testing

The 4261 GPRS go/nogo option for the Willtek 4200 Series mobile service tester will allow mobile phone repair shops to identify faulty GPRS phones cheaply and quickly. The ability to test GPRS handsets locally saves mobile phone shops the cost of shipping it to a specialised service centre; it also reduces the time users have to wait for the mobile phone to be returned and the shop's investment in replacement handsets for the time that the supposedly defective phone is travelling. The option is now available for new testing instruments and as an upgrade to units already shipped; a GPRS measurement option is planned for Q2/2003.

7. Foam retains its antistatic properties

Critical electronics devices, assemblies and equipment are known to be susceptible to "static zap". As little as 100 to 200V can cause serious problems for a power MOSFET and 250 to 2000V can cause irreparable damage to a CMOS transistor. The damage can be catastrophic or partial, but either way it can cause untold problems with equipment performance. To overcome this potential problem, Zotefoams has developed a permanently static dissipative, protective foam under the Plastazote brand.

8. World's first claim for 5W surface-mount resistor

TT Electronics has launched the industry's first surface-mount power resistor capable of 5W continuous dissipation. The robust cement-coated wire-wound WA85Z resistor makes use of a novel SMD lead forming technique, pioneered by TT Electronics, to convert axial power resistors into an SMD format. The 5W component is a new addition to the WA80Z Series family of resistors which is already available in 2 and 3W ratings (at 25C), with values from 10mohm to 6.8kohm and tolerances to 1%.

9. Dual PLL has wireless LAN standards covered

The Fujitsu MB15F76UL is a novel low-power PLL (phase locked loop) solution for wireless LANs. The dual-frequency synthesiser (IF+RF) is suited to every WLAN standard, particularly IEEE802.11a+b, with RF operating frequencies ranging from 2 to 6GHz. With the market demands for ever-decreasing power consumption in PLLs, this new product features a typical supply current consumption of 6.2mA at 3V in RF range, with a supply voltage range of 2.7 to 3.6V.

10. Power amp boosts wireless network range

The SiGe Semiconductor RangeCharger SE2522BL power amplifier delivers a combination of high output power and power control features to improve transmission range and efficiency of wireless access devices compliant to the IEEE802.11b WLAN specifications. The SE2522BL is capable of +23dBm of linear output power at an adjacent channel power ratio (ACPR) of -30dBc. Considering the 2-3dBm losses typical of most WLAN systems, this performance allows designers to easily achieve 20dBm at the antenna.
