Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:
Electronicstalk has never been one for overt flag-waving, despite repeated requests from some quarters that we should highlight UK-made products in our coverage. The market is an increasingly global one, and a website of all things needs to recognise that fact.
However, it is only fair to give credit where credit is due. And the British Government deserves some for its successful environmental policies.
The Enhanced Capital Allowance Scheme has been a major success. This fact was reinforced this week when in reading our sister site Engineeringtalk I noticed that CEMAP (the organisation representing Europe's motor makers) was bemoaning the fact that only 20% of current motor sales around Europe comprised motors in the highest Eff1 efficiency category.
A straw poll of motor manufacturers, however, then revealed that the vast majority of these Eff1 sales were in the UK. EU countries with no equivalent of the Enhanced Capital Allowance Scheme - such as France and Germany - are continuing to specify lower-efficiency devices.
The British Government's avowed intention to follow the requirements of the Kyoto protocol are in marked contrast to the "brown" polices of other developed countries such as the USA and Australia. Now, in its schemes to encourage efficiency, it is putting its supposedly greener European neighbours in the shade.
All of this is excellent news for the UK motion control industry and the component manufacturers that supply it… not to mention the environment.
I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.
Alternatively, the full stories behind all the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below.
In the meantime, if you have any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best wishes

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. Digital terrestrial TV chips shrink box designs
Zarlink reckons its ZL10310 and ZL10311 DTV processors will allow consumer electronics manufacturers to design the world's smallest digital terrestrial set-top boxes - less than half the size of today's models. The devices are the first to merge all major DVB-T processing functions outside the RF onto one chip. The processors integrate COFDM (coded orthogonal frequency division multiplex) demodulation with a complete set-top box processing engine - MPEG-2 transport demultiplexer, audio and video decoder, a high-performance RISC CPU, and STB peripheral interfaces.

2. Comms processor boosts PCI system bandwidth
The newest member of the IDT Interprise PCI family delivers enhanced system bandwidth to communications applications within the enterprise and access market segments, including desktop/workgroup switches, gateways, wireless access points (WAPs) and virtual private network (VPN) equipment. The RC32438 Interprise-PCI integrated communications processor also serves as a platform for IDT to develop future products that target emerging market segments such as embedded security and converged gateways.

3. Handheld tester runs three telecomms tests in one
LEM has added the Iso-Tel 500 to its range of insulation and earth testing products for telecomms applications. The new instrument combines three instruments in one: a universal insulation tester incorporating low resistance and continuity tests at 200mA; an industry-standard multimeter; and capacitance and cable length measurement. The handheld unit is small and robust, being smaller than most single-function insulation testers. The Iso-Tel 500 measures insulation resistance up to 20Gohm with test voltages from 50 to 500V.

4. Analogue front ends improve their images
New from Analog Devices are a pair of state-of-the-art analogue front-end (AFE) convertors for digital imaging using CMOS image sensors and CCDs. The AD9821 is the industry's first 12bit, 40Msample/s AFE for interfacing with CMOS image sensors used in applications for which image quality is essential, such as medical imaging, microscopy, industrial/machine vision, digital photography, biometrics and automatic inspection equipment. The AD9845B is the industry's highest performance 12bit, 30Msample/s AFE and is designed for high-speed, high-resolution CCD imaging applications, such as scientific and industrial imaging devices.

7. Optocouplers protect high-datarate inputs
Agilent Technologies reckons it has developed the industry's fastest optocouplers, capable of transmitting data at 50Mbaud, and ideal for use in a variety of industrial and commercial applications. Optocouplers separate and protect sensitive circuitry to allow safe interface between high and low voltages in electronic systems. The Agilent HCPL-7723/0723 optocouplers offer a 2ns pulsewidth distortion, a performance breakthrough that helps maintain a high datarate over longer line distances.

8. Processor PMC module includes security coprocessor
The PrPMC815 is the fastest Processor PMC module to date from Motorola Computer Group. Based on a 700MHz PowerPC 750FX processor the PrPMC815 also features an MPC185 security coprocessor. For the first time on a PrPMC module, the variety of encryption capabilities will enable network equipment providers to rapidly develop and deploy a range of security applications. Motorola's PowerPlus III architecture provides lower latency and improved memory bandwidth giving the PrPMC815 significantly better performance over traditional PCI-based network security implementations.

Philips has developed the industry's first I2C integrated device that combines both I/O expansion and nonvolatile memory functions (EEPROM) on one device. This integration offers 33% savings in board space. The devices are simple drop in replacements that add memory space to boards without the hassle of a board redesign. Philips' PCA9500 and PCA9501 devices are ideal for applications such as multicard systems for telecomms equipments, and maintenance in computing, communications, and consumer systems that need both general purpose inputs/outputs (GPIO) and nonvolatile memory.
