Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:
Silicon, apparently, is good for you, according to specialists at King's College and St Thomas's hospital in London. The staple element of the electronics industry plays a key part in stimulating collagen, which in turn is essential for strength and flexibility in human bones.
But fear not. This is not another hare-brained scheme to transform electronics waste into dietary supplements (or indeed into healthy snack foods - silicon crisps anyone?).
The best news is that beer is one of the richest sources of silicon in the modern diet, and half a pint contains around 20% of the recommended daily intake of 30-40mg.
This, unfortunately is yet another case of the medical profession using unnecessarily complicated language. So to put this into an engineering perspective, two and a half pints of beer contains the recommended daily intake of silicon. (Somehow, it sounds so much better worded that way).
I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.
Alternatively, the full stories behind all the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below.
In the meantime, if you have any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best wishes

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. Controller mops up multimedia functions for PDAs
New from MediaQ is the MQ-1188 multimedia platform controller for PDA and mobile wireless devices. With twice the clock rate of earlier MediaQ chips, the MQ-1188 dramatically boosts the performance of graphics functions such as colour image capturing and rendering, and video playback. The new chip also features a built-in interface to popular baseband processors for wireless connectivity, and integrated SDIO (Secure Digital IO) controllers for data storage and peripherals.

2. Integrated gateway chip takes five ports onboard
Micrel reckons its KS8695 chip and reference design package is the industry's most integrated high-performance SOHO gateway solution. The KS8695 is a multiport gateway on a chip supported by software and tools to provide a complete hardware and software solution for ODM/OEM customers. With the introduction of the KS8695, Micrel is the first company to successfully integrate five-port fast Ethernet transceivers, MACs, switch controller and on-chip frame buffer memory with a high-performance ARM922T core, offering a fully optimised solution for the SOHO gateway market.

3. ASIC technology aims for budget FPGA replacement
AMI Semiconductor (AMIS) has outlined the next phase in the roadmap for its high-performance, low-power hybrid gate array solutions with the launch of a 1.5V version of its popular XPressArray technology. Aimed at medium-density, low power 1.5V ASICs and FPGA-to-ASIC conversions, the new 1.5V XPressArray platform is ideal for developing cost-effective ASIC replacements for FPGAs such as Virtex II from Xilinx and Stratix from Altera. These replacements can be pin-for-pin compatible with the FPGA parts, or developers can choose to reduce size and component count by converting multiple FPGAs to a single XPressArray ASIC.

5. Picoammeter provides femtoamp resolution
Keithley Instruments reckons its Model 6487 picoammeter/voltage source provides a set of measurement capabilities unique in the industry. These include low current sensitivity near that of an electrometer, with ease of use and pricing comparable to a high performance DMM. The Model 6487 is a 5.5-digit instrument that can apply a voltage stimulus as high as 500V to a device under test (DUT) and measure currents as low as 20fA. It also provides direct readout of resistance measurements up to 5x10e16ohm using the source voltage, measure current method, including an alternating voltage method to minimise background current errors.

6. Convertor ensures accurate LED driving
Used with a high-efficiency switching transistor, the Zetex ZXSC400 voltage-mode boost convertor IC enables the current in an LED chain to be accurately set and monitored by a single resistor. Across the full supply range of a lithium-ion cell, the ZXSC400's excellent load and line regulation means that LED current typically changes by less than 1%.

10. Multipurpose waveform generator sends and receives
WaveLab from Add2 is a general-purpose signal interface module that can both capture and simulate the analogue waveforms present within a wide range of electrical circuits. The concept started life as a plug-in PC card for generating arbitrary waveforms representing the power profile of a CNC machine during a typical cutting cycle. In this application, the waveform generator was used to develop tool wear and condition monitoring systems for use on mass production transfer lines throughout the automotive industry. It is now available as a multipurpose unit, competitively priced to complement any fully equipped test and development laboratory.
