Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:

Just when we were ready to perform the last rights on the concept of an electronics trade fair, along comes Electronica and proves everybody wrong (see report below).

Certainly, visitor numbers were down on the previous event. But the decline was a paltry 7-8% or so, and the intervening two years since Electronica 2000 have seen considerable changes in both the market and in attitudes to business travel. (Whisper it, but even US shows like Comdex are suffering.)

If anything, this year's event - although fractionally smaller - can boast some significant improvements. For while the number of visitors was down, the total number of companies represented by these visitors rose by more than 3000 (perhaps a sign of down-sizing).

But, more to the point, more than 30% of the visitors were from outside Germany, increasing the show's international credentials.

With ElectronicaUSA already on the horizon, perhaps it might be time for ElectronicaUK.

I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.

Alternatively, the full stories behind all the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by e-mail alone: see details below.

In the meantime, if you have any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.

Best wishes

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. Optimism from Electronica visitors

The 20th Electronica underlined its leading role as a motivator for the market. 36% of visitors assessed the current economic situation as "good", while it is still "acceptable" for a further 36%. The mood among exhibitors is not quite so buoyant: 25% consider the situation good, 41% acceptable. The considerably more positive view taken by the visitors indicates that they have a greater tendency to invest. This illustrates the confidence shown by users of electronics.

2. Processors bridge network technology gaps

National Semiconductor is claiming a major technology advance towards an industry-wide goal of creating a single, seamless worldwide network of networks. National's new CP3000 family of embedded connectivity processors will dramatically simplify the creation of linked networks and connected devices. The CP3000 family includes the hardware, software, development tools and technical support to simplify and reduce the design and qualification cycle of connected embedded applications. National Semiconductor's CP3BT10, CP3BT13, CP3UB17 and CP3CN17 processors bridge the different connectivity and protocol standards in networks.

3. Active design boosts automotive power levels

International Rectifier has developed the first active integrated rectifier regulator (AIRR) for automotive alternators. The AIRR has been specifically designed to Delphi Corp's specifications for the alternator of the recently introduced DaimlerChrysler Maybach luxury vehicle. The AIRR can generate substantially higher power levels in a smaller outline than traditional passive rectifiers and alternator regulators. This technology breakthrough opens the path for future power electronics development for next generation starter/alternators.

4. Onboard CAN interfaces put MCUs on the road

Two new series of low-pin-count (maximum 64-pin) small-package 16bit microcontrollers from Hitachi feature on-chip CAN interfaces. The H8/36057 and H8/36037 series are designed for use in automotive electrical equipment such as door modules, airbags and anti-theft devices, as well as industrial and factory automation equipment. There are 16 new models in the two series, four have on-chip Flash memory (sample shipments start Q3/03) and 12 have on-chip mask ROM (volume production starts Q4/03).

6. Pseudo-SRAM is space-saving alternative to SDRAM

As well as offering a smaller, lower power alternative to SDRAM in portable and battery-powered equipment, the industry's highest density 32Mbit and world's first 64Mbit pseudo-SRAM devices also minimise component count by eliminating the need for DRAM interface circuitry. Featuring a standard SRAM interface and single-transistor DRAM-like memory cell structure, Toshiba's 32 and 64Mbit pseudo-SRAM devices are targeted at applications such as PDAs and next-generation mobile phones.

7. Programmable SoC gains RTOS support

The QuickMIPS programmable SoC has been certified to support Green Hills Software's Integrity RTOS and Multi 2000 integrated development environment. This combination provides embedded system designers with a complete "out-of-the-box" solution that significantly increases design performance while reducing development time by allowing the concurrent debug of hardware and software. By porting QuickLogic's board support package (BSP) to the Green Hills Integrity and Multi 2000 embedded system tools, developers now have a comprehensive suite of core and cross-development tools and utilities, optimised for the MIPS processor platform.

9. Coating gives economical and repeatable shielding

Chomerics has a new automated conformal coating process for the application of a uniform layer of metallic material onto either plastic or metal electronics housings. Ecoplate provides a high performance, repeatable, and economical alternative to established painting and plating methods. Low tooling costs make the process suitable for use in both high and low volume applications. The material used in the process is Ecoplate 5030, it has a composition of 80% tin and 20% zinc.

10. Scope and probes target speedy serial designs

Tektronix has a new set of signal integrity measurement and analysis tools for digital engineers developing fast serial-bus-based systems and computing, networking and communications devices. Emerging technologies such as PCI Express, USB2, and many others are defined by their high datarates and by the engineering challenge of capturing and analysing the signal integrity of the system elements and components. Importantly, these technologies are migrating into mid-market products, whose developers need measurement tools with uncompromised performance and signal fidelity from probing, to acquisition, and analysis.
