Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:
I am sure that every Electronicstalk reader can remember the first battery-powered toy from his or her childhood. Mine was a 1960s vintage drumming monkey that predated the ubiquitous Duracell bunny by at least a couple of decades and required regular replenishment with four-packs of U2 batteries.
Now, as the father of a young child I am allowed once again to gaze in wonder at the shelves of toy departments. And what a change there has been in the last 30 years or so. Not only have low-cost electronic toys taken over the market, but that old chestnut "batteries not included" is hardly to be seen.
And therein lies a serious problem. Take for example the dummy mobile phone I bought for my son last week.
The device is a near-perfect replica of his mother's Nokia 3110, and young Alexander takes great delight in the flashing display and the assortment of ringtones, bleeps and the like that can be produced from pressing the various keys on the keypad.
After a few days' use, the volume of these tones is already starting to decrease - clearly a sign of declining battery power. But when I rather belatedly tried to locate the battery compartment, I was shocked to find there wasn't one. The battery is hard-wired to the toy's PCB, and is clearly not meant to be replaced.
And this device is not alone. Sadly, the siren on his favourite fire engine is now almost inaudible.
Hopefully we will all be able to rely on our children retaining a vivid sense of imagination and wanting to continue to play with their toys long after the hard-wired batteries expire. Don't get me wrong: I'm not being mean about this. After all, none of the toys in question costs more than a couple of pounds.
It's just that I'm dreading him asking me where toys go to when they're recycled under the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive.
I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.
Alternatively, the full stories behind all the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below.
In the meantime, if you have any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best wishes
