Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:

Last week's editorial drew a mixed postbag, split between those who were surprised that companies could still afford to ignore sales leads and those for whom this was no surprise at all.

Clearly, the cynics among you have already experienced the frustration of your requests for further information dropping into a black hole.

But this is not a new phenomenon.

I well remember an incident in the late 1980s from my days as Editor of the late lamented Electronics Express. We had delivered several thousand sales leads to a certain Japanese semiconductor company (who will remain nameless). In fact, the company was so impressed with the level of leads provided by the magazine that it took out an expensive series of advertisements… which generated still more leads.

This, naturally, we thought was wonderful. The system was working just as it should, and the magazine was playing a valuable role in getting engineers in touch with suppliers.

A year or so later, Electronics Express was no more and I was working in PR. And among my clients was the aforementioned Japanese semiconductor company.

I will never forget the afternoon when I was asked - quite candidly - whether I thought the company ought to be making more of its sales leads "What do you mean?", I asked. Then I was shown a stack of printed labels of enquiries from magazines that was nearer to 2m high than 1m.

I must admit I didn't have the nerve to look at the bottom of the pile to see whether any were from Electronics Express - perhaps if I had I could have sympathised with those who claim to be "snowed under" with enquiries.

Nonetheless, my offer from last week still stands: if you feel that any company featured on Electronicstalk has ignored a reasonable request for information, do please let me know.

I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.

Alternatively, the full stories behind all the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below.

In the meantime, if you have any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.

Best wishes

3. MOSFET controller drives automotive power

The new A3935 power MOSFET controller IC from Allegro MicroSystems is designed specifically for automotive applications involving the control of high-power motors. The A3935 provides six high-current gate-drive outputs capable of driving a wide range of power N-channel MOSFETs. A requirement of automotive systems is steady operation over a varying battery input range, and this is achieved in the A3935 by an integral pulse-frequency-modulated boost convertor which creates a constant supply voltage for driving the external MOSFETs.

7. Gap fillers provide thermal relief

Chomerics has two form-in-place thermal gap filler materials that provide a highly conformable path between hot components and heat spreaders. Therm-A-Gap T630 and T630G are designed to be dispensed directly from either a syringe or a tube without premixing or curing. The unique viscoelastic materials achieve 50% deflection with only 1lb/in2 of applied pressure; this enables them to effectively fill gaps caused by loose or varying assembly tolerances without risk of damage to components.
