Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:
One of the most pleasant aspects of being an electronics journalist is the "wow" factor. And after more than 20 years in this business, no matter how cynical I may try to be, there are new and product stories each week on Electronicstalk that have the ability to stir the blood.
Conversely, at the same time, it is difficult not to be amazed by the sales and marketing ineptitude of so many major suppliers to the electronics industry. At the risk of sounding like Victor Meldrew, the "wows" are evenly balanced by the instances of "I do not believe it".
Take, for example, the new Electronicstalk Newsletter "Request a brochure by post" service. Now, at first glance this facility - introduced a couple of weeks ago - may seem almost luddite. After all, we're doing more and more online these days, so why should we need old fashioned printed brochures?
Many of our readers, though, still like to have a printed brochure in their hands, and we are only too happy to help them out. And this view has been vindicated by the high numbers of you who have been prepared to register for this service. However, for some suppliers, this - it appears - is just too much.
When we started the service, we asked every company that sends news to Electronicstalk to ensure that we had the correct "sales" e-mail address for their company. (A fairly innocuous request, one might think.) Some of the responses have been staggering.
These have ranged from companies who have flatly refused to supply an e-mail address (which begs the question why they bother to send us product information), to several who can only supply an address for a national sales organisation that refuses to service requests from outside its sales area (or indeed to pass them on to somebody who will).
One might have thought that with market conditions as tough as they are, the attitude that anything out of the ordinary is "somebody else's problem" was doomed to extinction. But amazingly it is still out there.
Our whole purpose here at Electronicstalk is to put our readers in tough with suppliers. And when this doesn't work as it should we are understandably piqued: our credibility depends on putting you in touch with the correct people.
So if you feel you have been ignored by a supplier featured either in this newsletter or on the Electronicstalk website, drop me a line at the address below.
I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.
Alternatively, the full stories behind all the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below.
In the meantime, if you have any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best wishes

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. Amplifier array drives MEMS-based crossconnects
Supertex has developed a 32-channel 250V amplifier array IC for driving MEMS-based optical networking systems. The HV254 is the first in a family of high-voltage amplifier array ICs based on Supertex's high-voltage CMOS/DMOS process technology, ideal for driving MEMS (microelectromechanical systems) in optical crossconnects, switches and tunable optical laser modules. Each of the 32 channels in the HV254 is configured as an independent, noninverting amplifier. These outputs can swing up to 250V providing adequate movement for an optical MEMS switch and guarantee a slew rate of 3V/us that provides adequate time to switch from one optical fibre line to another.

2. Free intro to EM simulation software
Ansoft has launched a new campaign to expand the use of its electromagnetic and electrostatic simulation software by offering a free subset of the company's commercially available Maxwell 2D. The software, marketed as Maxwell SV, contains advanced 2D electric fields, AC/DC magnetic fields, and eddy-current solvers that engineering design professionals, professors, and students use to design components such as sensors, actuators, motors and transformers.

3. Analysers take on high-speed serial data
LeCroy has released what it reckons are the world's first serial data analyser instruments. The SDA 6000 (6GHz), SDA 5000 (5GHz) and SDA 3000 (3GHz) make it easy to accurately and reliably perform measurements on high-speed serial data streams. A wide range of target applications include computer (and computer component), design/validation, testing of high-speed differential electrical links and capture/analysis of optical signals (up to and including OC48). The SDAs are designed with a unique user interface that makes the measurement process easy and incorporate LeCroy's patent-pending X-Stream technology allowing engineers to conduct real time analysis on high-speed, complex datarates at up to 3.5Gbit/s.

4. Speedy MPU integrates memory and I/O interfaces
PMC-Sierra has expanded its RM9000 family of highly integrated MIPS-based processors with the 1GHz single-core RM9000x1. The RM9000x1 integrates memory and high-speed I/O interfaces on-chip to optimise performance, and uses a 0.13 micron low voltage process to reduce total device power consumption to an industry low of less than 5W. The RM9000x1 is ideal for use in core and edge routers, DSLAMs, multiservice switches, high-end laser printers, storage area network applications and wireless basestations.

5. Mixer mops up a batch of basestation components
The MAX9981 is the first active SiGe mixer to include an LO switch and splitter, two LO buffers, and on-chip baluns - all in a dual package. This mixer is specifically designed to meet the demanding requirements of today's cellular and GSM900 wireless infrastructure applications. The MAX9981 provides 2dB of conversion gain, 12dB of noise figure, and 26.8dBm of IIP3 performance, while replacing two mixers, four amps, three baluns, an LO switch and splitter, plus dozens of discrete components.

6. Fan mounts damp out vibration and noise
Small fans are often the dominant noise source in set-top boxes, video projection equipment, office and lab equipment. A properly designed isolation mount made of a high damping material can form a resilient connection between the fan and its housing. This will stop the transfer of structural vibrations to the chassis and enclosure panels. Reducing these vibrations means less sound radiation and quieter operation. Gel-Mec's new antivibration fan mount range is designed for the most commonly used small cooling fans.

7. Rework station covers through-hole and SMT repair
JBC's AM 6000 rework station has four modules - hot air, desoldering, pick and place and soldering - to cover the main tasks for rework and repair of through-hole and SMT printed circuit boards. The hot air system will desolder any size of surface mount component and, with the help of a range of special protectors that surround the rework component, it concentrates the heat on the IC while also protecting the remainder of the circuit.

8. InfiniBand switch is practical and affordable
The EIS-4008-CU datacommunications switch from SBS Technologies features a flexible configuration that increases system performance. Power supplies are often the point of failure in network equipment. With this in mind, SBS designed the EIS-4008-CU with redundant, hot swappable supplies. This means that either of the unit's power supplies can be replaced without causing any network downtime, a feature that supports the ability for data centres to offer quality of service guarantees to their customers.
