Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:
Electronica excepted, European trade exhibitions may be losing their gloss, but now comes news of a show I can heartily recommend.
London's Science Museum has begun an exhibition of memorabilia from 40 years of James Bond movies.
So quite apart from providing memories of many a Saturday night spent at the movies (not to mention TV reruns), this is a show which also allows all of us to relive our childhood trips to the Science Museum - certainly my first experience of interactive (almost multimedia) technology.
This is one exhibition that should run and run.
I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.
Alternatively, the full stories behind all the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below.
In the meantime, if you have any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best wishes

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. Transceiver handles non-PC USB uses
The ISP1301 is a Universal Serial Bus (USB) On-The-Go (OTG) transceiver chip to enable point-to-point communications between digital devices such as mobile phones, cameras, video recorders and PDAs. The new Philips transceiver can transmit and receive serial data at both full-speed (12Mbit/s) and low-speed (1.5Mbit/s) datarates, allowing a device to adjust data transmission speeds depending on the application, thus saving precious battery power. As the newest addition to the Philips family of USB OTG chips, the ISP1301 transceiver allows digital devices to connect directly to one another, without the use of a PC.

2. Low-power-radio chip sniffs to cut consumption
The ASTRX2 is a single-chip 433.92MHz narrowband RF link that uses a programmable time between wakeups in Sniff Mode to conserve power. The design has been optimised for low-power applications where long battery life is required, such as implantable medical device applications and automotive applications including remote keyless entry, tyre pressure control and adaptive radio control.

3. Development platform aims for SoCs in half a year
At the heart of ARC's next-generation SoC development platform is the newest version of the ARCtangent-A5 user-customisable 32bit RISC/DSP microprocessor core. The platform also includes configurable software-development tools, a real-time operating system (RTOS), network-protocol stacks, USB and Ethernet peripherals with device drivers. ARC's next generation SoC platform directly supports the company's mission to provide customers with a single SoC development platform where design cycles of six months or less are critical.

4. Waterproof Ethernet connectors for industrial nets
With Ethernet networks now extending from the office onto the factory floor and beyond into external environments, there is a need for a more robust and reliable connection for data applications. The industry standard connector for Ethernet networks, the RJ45, is delicate when faced with the more physical demands of industrial or external environments. Water, dust, oil and chemicals are all hazards, as are the potential for connector and cable abuse in a rough working environment. To meet these demands Bulgin's new Ethernet connector system is based on the tried and tested standard Buccaneer waterproof power connector.

5. Batteries shrink into IC packages
Cymbet Corp is introducing application specific solid energy technology (ASSET), thin-film rechargeable batteries that can be customised in physical size and energy capacity to fit on or within integrated circuit packages with little or no impact to IC package profile. Because of its slim design, the battery can be custom made to fit virtually any physical size required by the circuit or system design, thereby eliminating the need for bulky battery compartments. The battery can be a stand-alone power source on a flexible or rigid substrate, or fabricated on the circuit or device that it is intended to power, such as on the lid of an integrated circuit, or on the surface of a printed circuit board.

6. Logic libraries cut silicon costs
Long known as a leader in the embedded memory market, Virage Logic is extending that role to the broader category of semiconductor IP platforms with its first foray into logic components. With its new family of area, speed and power (ASAP) logic products, which includes the ASAP high-speed (HS) metal programmable cell library and the ASAP high-density (HD) standard cell library, Virage Logic is slashing not only the price and power consumption of the overall chip, it is also improving performance.

8. Surface-mount socket puts fuses onboard
Wickmann Components has a surface-mount fuse socket designed to accept radial leaded TR5 and TE5 subminiature fuses, providing cost savings of up to 50% compared with other solutions. The 564 series socket permits the surface mounting and easy replacement of fuses rated at up to 250V and with current ratings from 50mA to 6.3A. The socket, which will also accept Wickmann's lower cost range of circuit protectors, will fit on a standard 6125 pad. The holder overcomes the problem of high-temperature soldering processes limiting users to fast-acting fuses, allowing true time-lag fuses to be specified.
