Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:

Last week's news of doom and gloom in the world of electronics publishing and exhibitions garnered a record postbag of Electronicstalk readers reminiscing about magazines and exhibitions of old. And these were not limited to the UK.

Marketing budgets, it would appear, have hit new lows. And both publishers and exhibition organisers are taking hard-headed decisions to get out while they are only marginally behind (see the latest news regarding Electronics World Expo below).

It becomes more evident each day that the Internet by its very existence has reduced the costs of the whole basic process of both marketing and selling. Let's face it, even without the likes of Electronicstalk, if an engineer wants to find a new source for, say, aluminium electrolytic capacitors, a broad-brush Internet search engine such as Google will provide more than enough leads.

Who would have thought that ten years ago?

Now factor in a resource such as Electronicstalk and compare it with a "traditional" printed electronics magazine. Quite apart from the advantages of permanent archives, ease of searching and simple navigation direct from the website to that of the supplier concerned, online media operate at a massive cost advantage compared with the old school.

Not so many years ago I was asked by a major US semiconductor manufacturer for my views on the publishing business and the shift to so-called "new media". At the time I was convinced in the future of the printed word: "Let's face it", I said, "nobody's going to take a web browser to the can with them".

Ironically, that manufacturer is now making a fortune out of wireless LAN chipsets. And I'm not so sure about traditional media any more.

I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.

Alternatively, the full stories behind all the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below.

In the meantime, if you have any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.

Best wishes

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. Electronics World Expo postponed

Electronics World Expo, the design to manufacture event for the electronics industries that was due to take place in February 2003 at Earls Court, London has been postponed by organiser Turret RAI. The show incorporated the Electronic Components Industries Fair and OnBoard, the electronic production and assembly show. New launch EDA Expo, which was also part of EWEX, will now run on its own later in 2003.

2. Packet processors put TDM on Ethernet

A new class of communications chips will significantly redefine the economics of delivering TDM voice and data, the most widely deployed access services in the world, over standard IP and Ethernet packet networks. Zarlink's MT90880/1/2/3 packet processors are the industry's first devices to achieve high-density CESoP (circuit emulation services over packet) for TDM. With this capability, low-cost IP/Ethernet networks can - for the first time - transport high volumes of profitable TDM access services, such as T1/E1 leased lines, with the same high quality as more expensive TDM networks.

3. Multiprocessor features dual 1GHz CPU cores

PMC-Sierra is sampling its highly integrated RM9000x2 64bit MIPS-based dual processor. Manufactured in an industry-leading 0.13-micron, low-k copper process, the RM9000x2 device runs the Linux operating system at 1.0GHz. The RM9000x2 solution draws less than 10W of total device power with each processor running at 1GHz and all of the memory and I/O interfaces running at maximum frequency. The RM9000x2 integrates multiple high-speed bus interfaces, which include HyperTransport, DDR SDRAM, SysAD and a boot bus, to enable low latency access to main memory and high bandwidth to external I/O devices.

4. Testers change from bus to bus

The Bi4-Series of serial bus test instruments (BTI) is the first "synthetic" instrument capable of assuming a wide range of serial bus protocols required in military and aerospace test environments. Teradyne will introduce the Bi4-Series of serial bus test instruments to the public at the Autotestcon conference this week in Huntsville, AL. The Bi4-Series BTI possesses built-in "morphability", to assume the bus protocol language of serial communications buses used in operational or factory environments.

5. More memory and speed for data-acquisition SoCs

Analog Devices has released five new MicroConverters and their associated QuickStart evaluation kits, adding to its extensive family of data-acquisition SoCs. These new devices preserve the signature analogue-to-digital convertor precision, enhancing the MicroConverter family by offering an eight-fold increase in on-chip memory - facilitating larger programs and C programming. Each device offers 62Kbyte of Flash/EE program memory, 8Kbyte of Flash/EE data memory, and 2304byte of data RAM. A comprehensive suite of peripherals includes precision ADCs, voltage output DACs, PWM/sigma-delta outputs, temperature sensor and reference.

6. Capacitor provides flexible 42V automotive storage

Nesscap reckons its recently introduced 2.7V ultracapacitors are an ideal solution for future 42V automotive power systems. Auto manufacturers are moving to the higher power system to support growing electrical demands for increasing fuel economy and reducing emissions as well as for powering interior comfort accessories. A 42V power architecture can enable hybrid power train capabilities such as "idle stop", in which a vehicle's engine would shut down at traffic lights, saving gas and reducing pollutants.

7. Backplane material reduces bromine pollution

Environmental considerations about the end-of-life disposal of electronic equipment mean that the PCB raw material FR4 is becoming an increasing source of concern. The primary problem is the presence of bromide-based flame-retardants in both the laminate itself and the prepreg that separates the layers; these additives are an essential mechanism enabling the finished board to meet flame-retardant and self-extinguishing specifications. However, during incineration some bromide compounds can transmute into carcinogenic substances; if the PCB is disposed into a landfill site, the bromides can leach out into the water table.

8. Tester speeds UMTS network development

Tektronix has a new solution for real-time monitoring and analysis of the latest Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) mobile networks elements. UMTS network elements are much more complex to test than second generation (2G, 2.5G) components and continue to require fast, accurate verification at each interface. With this increased complexity and the evolving nature of UMTS element development, many of today's test solutions fail to completely address critical interfaces and protocols. Tektronix' newest software release for the K1297-G20 protocol tester, Version 2.01 (V2.01), adds important pieces to the UMTS "puzzle".

9. Offline switch cuts monitor standby power

The FS8S0765RC Fairchild power switch (FPS) is a highly integrated offline power switch for CRT monitor flyback power supply applications. This device integrates a fully avalanche-rated SenseFET (650V minimum breakdown rating) with a current mode PWM IC featuring primary side regulation. This unique combination minimises external components, simplifies designs and lowers cost in target applications. Featuring burst mode operation for standby mode (under 2W at 265V AC), the new FS8S0765RC greatly lowers power consumption by reducing switching loss.

10. Smaller die size for 30V process

PolarFab now offers a 1.25-micron, 30V junction-isolated modular bipolar process for 6in wafers. With a smaller feature size of 1.25um, compared with similar processes with a 4.0-micron geometry, the new BP30 process offers both increased packing density and a reduced die size. The BP30 process is ideal for power management applications up to 30V including amplifiers, line drivers and other linear applications. PolarFab's new BP30 process employs an innovative lateral isolation technique that provides tight packing density without increasing process complexity.
