Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:
It's not often that I am wont to use clichés like "the end of an era", but this week really does seem like it.
Speaking as one of those who stayed away from the UK Nepcon exhibition for the first time in many a year, it seems that I was not alone. But that's not the end to which I refer.
The big surprise of the week has been CMP's decision to close down the print versions of its three main remaining electronics titles: the UK version of EE Times (formerly Electronics Times), Microwave Engineering and Electronic Engineering Design (the grand-daddy of them all in its previous incarnation of Electronic Engineering).
As a barometer of the UK electronics industry, the closures speak volumes more than exhibition attendance ever can. But it is also a further instance of the demise of traditional media. The titles will live on online. And indeed EE Times is shortly to launch a thrice-weekly newsletter to back up its site (all of which is very flattering for Electronicstalk).
So now the UK which not so many years ago had three weekly newspapers and more than a dozen monthlies all dedicated to the electronics industry finds itself with a single weekly and but a handful of monthlies. Paper publishing, it seems, is not the lucrative business it used to be.
I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.
Alternatively, the full stories behind all the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below.
In the meantime, if you have any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best wishes
Laurence Marchini, Editor

1. Micromachined gyro takes signal processing onboard
The ADXRS MEMs-based gyroscope is the first commercially available device to integrate both an angular rate sensor and signal processing electronics onto a single piece of silicon. By integrating the sensor structure and all necessary signal-conditioning circuitry onto a single integrated circuit, Analog Devices' iMEMS ADXRS gyro is smaller, more accurate, more reliable, and more economical than other angular rate sensors in its class. The ADXRS gyro is mounted inside a small 7 x 7 x 3mm ball grid array (BGA) package, and consumes only 5mA at 5V.
