Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:

I have written in the past about the timeliness of the EU Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive, but perhaps, on reflection it may even be too late.

The most amazing statistic of the week was that no fewer than 15 million mobile handsets are scrapped each year in the UK alone as users upgrade to new technology. Now, that may be very good news for mobile manufacturers at the moment, but perhaps not so when the WEEE Directive hits in two years time, and they become responsible for recycling.

In the meantime, though, it seems there is no shortage of third parties willing to deplete the handset mountain, by a combination of recycling and offshore shipment.

But in the long run, it is the consumer has to understand that nothing electronic is truly disposable.

The Irish initiative to reduce the number of supermarket carrier bags making their way into landfill - or worse, the environment - has proved that the general public is quite capable of embracing green initiatives.

Indeed, global efforts to reduce CFC discharges have actually led to a gradual closing in the hole in the ozone layer over Antarctica. (Which makes it a little ironic that Australia is one of the few developed countries yet to sign up to its Kyoto responsibilities on CO2 emissions.)

Let's face it, green initiatives can even be beneficial to the global economy as a whole, and the electrical and electronics sectors in particular.

So, good luck to Shields Environmental, the latest company to address the handset recycling initiative. Lets just hope that the mobile manufacturers are watching, and can have no excuse for not knowing what to do with the waste when the responsibility becomes theirs.

I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.

Alternatively, the full stories behind all the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below.

In the meantime, if you have any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. Chip simplifies three-phase meter design

The ADE7752 is a three-phase electrical energy metering IC with watt-hour output. The ADE7752 is the three-phase counterpart to the widely used ADE7755 single-phase metering IC. Compatible with a wide range of three-phase grid configurations including direct connect and transformer operated, three- and four-wire distribution - it can be used in three-phase commercial and industrial revenue meters or submeters, three-phase motors or generators, and industrial control and utility automation applications.

2. Single-chip baseband for GSM basestations

Siemens IC Mobile and Texas Instruments have jointly developed what they claim to be the industry's smallest single-chip digital baseband solution for GSM basestations. The device performs all signal processing functions needed for a GSM carrier and is fully software backward compatible and downloadable. This future-proof solution combines standard TI DSPs with Siemens IP and SRAM onto a single device. In conjunction with TI's latest wireless infrastructure DSP technology, this solution fully supports all advanced features such as GPRS, Edge, GERAN, narrowband-AMR and wideband-AMR.

3. SoC speeds radio data processing

The XE88LC06A is a novel system on a chip designed to simplify radio telemetry. This miniature system benefits from both low power consumption and low cost as well as optimising throughput. The circuit contains a revolutionary block named BitJockey, the equivalent of a UART for the functionality of a wireless connection, which interfaces the microcontroller with any radio transceiver. The heart of the BitJockey consists of a serialisation block, around which there are a bit encoder and a bit decoder to facilitate standard communication formats (NRZ, Manchester, Miller), as well as input and output FIFO stacks.

4. Thermal tape sticks sinks to plastic BGAs

Thermattach T410 thermal tape from Chomerics has been developed to provide a reliable method for bonding heatsinks to hot-running devices. The highly thermally conductive material is especially suited to applications that require heatsinks to be bonded to plastic ball grid array (BGA) devices. T410 thermal tape has an overall thickness of 0.18mm, and features a 0.05mm aluminium foil carrier that is coated on one side with a silicone based pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA).

5. Arrayed waveguide gratings to cut DWDM costs

Agilent Technologies is developing a new family of arrayed waveguide gratings (AWGs) for dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) long-haul and metropolitan network applications. Agilent's AWG technology, based on a chemical vapour deposition (CVD) of glass on silicon process, enables high-volume, low-cost manufacturing and the integration of other components to lower costs for network equipment manufacturers. AWGs are integrated optical circuits that combine (multiplex) or separate (demultiplex) different wavelength signals in an optical network.

6. Core module speeds embedded systems development

Rabbit Semiconductor's fastest and most powerful microprocessor core module to date is the RCM3200 RabbitCore. The company reckons this is the ideal option for designers who want to rapidly develop and implement embedded systems with fully integrated 10/100BaseT Ethernet connectivity. Measuring only 69 x 47mm, the RCM3200 operates at 3.3V (with 5V-tolerant I/O), runs at 44.2MHz, and features 6six serial ports. Built-in low-EMI features, including a clock spectrum spreader, practically eliminate EMI problems, helping OEMs pass CE and regulatory RF emissions tests.

7. Transceiver cuts wireless LANs down to size

Maxim Integrated Products reckons its MAX2820 SiGe zero-IF transceiver is the industry's smallest RF transceiver designed specifically for 802.11b WLAN applications. The single-chip design features a direct-conversion (or zero-IF) architecture and integrated baseband filters for both receiver and transmitter. Only one low-cost ceramic RF bandpass filter is required. Older superhet radio designs require at least three RF/IF chips, three RF bandpass filters, an IF SAW filter, and approximately 30 additional passive components.

9. Platform-based coverification solution

The Nexus-PDK coverification solution is designed to dramatically shorten the verification cycle for embedded systems. Nexus-PDK provides the hub of a system coverification environment by performing high-level simulations of embedded platforms and cosimulating hardware and software implementations with popular third-party ISS and RTL tools. The Nexus-PDK solution also enables designers to quickly develop high-level embedded platform designs using a built-in platform developer's kit.

10. Filter is reconfigurable RF spectrum channeliser

RF Engines (RFEL) has developed a radical new patented filter bank design, called the Tuneable Pipelined Frequency Transform (TPFT). The TPFT allows the user to dynamically select sections of spectrum (channels) of differing bandwidths, from a broad band of spectrum, and to acquire and process these channels in real time. Furthermore, the design disregards the processing of those sections of spectrum that are not of interest, so improving the silicon efficiency even further.
