Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:

Last week's request for an explanation for the "trick fluorescent strip" brought a number of workable ways to recreate the phenomenon.

Not surprisingly, all involved the use of at least one RF source. But the prize for the most succinct response (which, incidentally, arrived within 10 minutes of the mailing of the newsletter!) goes to an old pal of mine, Mike Punter of Oxley Developments Company, who explains:

"If a strip light is positioned near a source of RF energy with no connection to the tube with any other power source (ie mains) the tube will 'light' (ask anyone who lives near Droitwitch or Rugby). If you then have a body or a hand that is reasonably earthed placed near the tube, almost touching, the tube will glow brighter near the hand".

I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. We currently have almost 10,000 engineers and other industry professionals on the circulation, so you're in good company. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.

But you don't need web access! All the full stories behind the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below. In the meantime, if you've got any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best wishes

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. Chip provides battery-friendly embedded WLANs

Significantly reducing the standby power consumption of 802.11b wireless LAN solutions up to tenfold, TI's new WLAN processor enables true embedded Wi-Fi applications without compromising battery life, or requiring extra batteries, bulky enclosures or continuous reliance on a power cord. The new processor is designed to provide highly power efficient 802.11b connectivity with up to a tenfold reduction in standby mode power consumption than competitive 802.11b chipsets for laptop computers, personal digital assistants (PDAs), cell phones and other portable devices.

2. Preregistration recommended for Electronica 2002

This year's Electronica takes place from Tuesday 12th to Friday 15th November at the new Munich Trade Fair Centre. Visitors to the show will be able to see the latest product offerings from the majority of the world's leading manufacturers and, for the first time, automotive electronics and embedded systems are given their own exhibition hall. This, says the organiser, reflects the importance of these technology sectors to the future of the electronics industry. Altogether, 2846 German and international exhibitors will be present across the 14 Halls of the show.

3. All-optical multiplexing boosts datarates

Oki Electric claims to have developed a new optical-fibre access technology based on OCDM (optical code division multiplexing). This technology, developed by Oki in collaboration with Osaka University, allows service providers to guarantee transmission capacity of up to 10Gbit/s in bandwidth for bidirectional communications over an access network. Service providers will also be able to offer flexible services for a variety of customer needs, such as offering multiple services on one network.

4. Demand prompts threefold VOA production rise

Lightconnect has increased production of its variable optical attenuators (VOAs) by 300% in the last quarter. This is in response to a surge in demand for the company's recently launched Fast VOA 4000 by several leading optical systems manufacturers. With 40dB attenuation range, this latest addition to Lightconnect's Fast VOA product line is able to block the transmission of light when no voltage is applied and reduce the amount of attenuation as the applied voltage is increased, thus providing additional protection for optical networks.

5. Convertors marry disparate optical standards

A new range of connector convertors on show at ECOC 2002 this week are claimed offer unparalleled levels of performance and reliability. Adamant's convertors, which use its fibre stub technology, meet two urgent industry demands - how to achieve world-class quality standards between legacy and new SFF (small form factor) connectors and also between the SFF connectors themselves.

6. Software verifies EMC test chamber uniformity

New software from Schaffner will help EMC test laboratories meet the test chamber field uniformity tests specified by IEC61000-4-3. According to Schaffner, the limitations of software currently available on the market, mean that most test laboratories and test houses are unable to meet the requirements of the standard. To address this issue, the company has developed two additional functions for its EMC Compliance 3 software which help engineers check the consistency of field uniformity, and its stability over time.
