Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:

In the late 1980s I was lucky enough to meet the late Lord Weinstock, a man at the time much criticised for failing to reinvest his company's mountain of cash. His attitude was simple: at least he still had a mountain of cash to reinvest. But in the yuppie era, the cautious approach was not appreciated by the City of London.

Weinstock's company was, of course GEC, latterly renamed Marconi, and now in desperate need of that mountain of cash as its shares reach a new low. In its day, GEC was a world-beating company, with interests ranging from microelectronics to power stations.

Certainly mistakes were made - indeed, I can't say I was too impressed with the longevity of my GEC videodisc player. But the thing that most impressed me in talking to the man was that he knew pretty much what was going on in each and every GEC company worldwide.

By the time of Lord Weinstock's death last month, his company had become less than a shadow of its former self. Perhaps it is for the best that he is not around to witness its final demise.

I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. We now have more than 9000 engineers and other industry professionals on the circulation, so you're in good company.

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. Budget display chip accelerates PC/TV convergence

Chrontel is shipping the world's first single-chip high-resolution flat panel display driver, display scaler and TV encoder to PC manufacturers. Chrontel's CH7017 integrates video functions that previously required three separate chips: a dual LVDS (low voltage differential signal) transmitter, which supports all flat panel display resolutions up to 2048 x 1536pixel at a 60Hz refresh rate; a display scaler, which automatically adjusts the selected pixel resolution to the physical size of the display; and a TV encoder (or TV-out), which sends video signals directly to a conventional NTSC or Pal television. Notebook PC manufacturers can now design an array of display options into their products by using a single low-cost IC.
