Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:

The most appealing part of e-mail as a communications medium is not so much its immediacy, but its interactivity.

I'm sure we've all taken an age to reply to the odd written letter in our time, to say nothing of procrastinating over completing the odd form. (Who mentioned tax returns?)

But when a response is as simple as a click on a reply button, there is little excuse for inertia. And this is a bit of a two-edged sword for journalists like myself.

On the one hand, if you the reader want to tell me I'm talking through the wrong orifice, it's all too easy for you to do so. On the other hand, when I ask for feedback, there's little excuse for not responding, is there?

Electronicstalk, you see, is due for a small overhaul.

Don't, worry. We're not adding meaningless animated graphics, pop-up screens or even bringing in the registration procedure that many other sites require.

Quite simply, we're outgrowing our product categories, and need to reorganise to make the site easier to use.

So, if there are any different technology areas you think are worth highlighting, or you have any suggestions how we might break down some of our sections to make it quicker to access the information you need, now is the time to tell us.

I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. We currently have thousands of engineers and other industry professionals on the circulation, so you're in good company.

In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can. But you don't need web access! All the full stories behind the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below. In the meantime, if you've got any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best wishes

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. CMOS sensors cut camera costs

Agilent Technologies has a new family of colour and monochrome CMOS image sensors. The smaller sensors, supplied in a 25% smaller and 50% thinner surface-mount package than previous versions, enable the design of compact, lower cost consumer and industrial digital camera solutions. The Agilent VGA colour image sensors (640 x 480 pixel) are ideal for PC cameras, detachable cameras for mobile phones and PDAs, and for digital still and dual-mode cameras. The CIF monochrome image sensors (352 x 288 pixel) are excellent choices for biometrics (identifying individual human characteristics such as fingerprints), surveillance and security, machine vision and bar code scanners.

2. Variable optical attenuator prevents system damage

Lightconnect has expanded its portfolio of MEMS-based variable optical attenuators with its FVOA (fast VOA) Series 4000. Designed for preventing system damage, the FVOA Series 4000 is ideally suited for receiver protection or for use as a safety switch during transmitter turn-up until the laser stabilises. Other applications for the device include single- and multichannel power control, as well as equalisation and optical add/drop. Lightconnect's FVOA Series 4000 has passed all of the stringent Telcordia GR-1209 and GR-1221 tests.

4. Blower aims to cool hot spots

New from Electric Motor Applications for OEM applications, the FLW38-29A01 microblower has a rotatable output duct that allows air to be aimed directly at any component or assembly that needs to be cooled. Alternatively, the unit may be mounted so that it draws warmed air away from a hot component or surface and discharges it in the most appropriate direction (to the outside of a cabinet for example).

5. Signal-integrity tools tackle nanometre crosstalk

The latest release of the CeltIC signal integrity solution, the recommended crosstalk analysis tool in the TSMC 130nm reference design flow, includes major enhancements critical to successful nanometre design. CeltIC 4.0 features greater capacity of more than five million gates flat, to handle the increased scale of nanometre designs. It also demonstrates better performance with its Linux port, and provides even greater accuracy with its ability to model nonlinear slew degradation effects.
