Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:
I suppose it was inevitable. After last week's invitation to dish the dirt on dodgy websites we received a figurative sack full of nominations for worst site on the net… all for different sites.
So while on that basis it would be unfair to single any particular site for the award, a number of sites seem to share the same faults.
As I mentioned last week, sometimes suppliers seem to lose touch with their regular customers in the quest to win new ones. And several of you complained of companies who had forsaken straightforward product-oriented information in favour of a "solutions" focus.
Actually, this has been a recurring theme of late, as readers of our sister site Engineeringtalk will testify. However, it was interesting to be contacted by a worried marketeer whose company had just refocused on "solutions"… especially as her company had not been nominated!
Another recurring theme was one of speed. As we all know, there is only so long that we are prepared to wait for a front page to download. But there are those, it seems, who will never appreciate this. Broadband use may be growing rapidly, but the majority of us are still stuck in a dial-up world. Indeed, worldwide a significant proportion of users still pay for their Internet access per minute or per megabyte downloaded (or have contractual limits based on time or downloads).
But by far the most common complaint was that of simple readability. Some companies, it seems, have so much to tell us that they feel the need to cram as much information as possible onto every page of their sites… even if it means going down to 4pt type.
Without wishing to boast, I have 17 inches on my desktop. But even that is not big enough to properly view a number of the sites nominated without pressing my nose against the screen. And while my eyesight isn't exactly 20:20, I would dread to think what some of these sites look like on a 15-inch screen.
It's no surprise that most website designers use large 20-inch-plus monitors. Sadly, it seems some of them have forgotten that most of us don't.
Next week we'll look at some of the best sites around.
I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. We currently have thousands of engineers and other industry professionals on the circulation, so you're in good company. In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.
But you don't need web access! All the full stories behind the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below. In the meantime, if you've got any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best wishes
