Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:
One of the dubious pleasures of my job as Editor of Electronicstalk is in visiting an awful lot of websites to verify that the companies concerned are indeed relevant to you folks, the readers of Electronicstalk. Not that I tend to spend a lot of time on each site… just long enough to find out exactly what it is the company does to earn a crust.
Unfortunately, the job is taking longer.
Now, it's fairly obvious that in the long run, the larger Electronicstalk becomes the new additions will inevitably become all the more esoteric. But that is not the problem.
Also, web designers are increasingly tailoring their output towards broadband users (which is unfortunate - and time consuming - for those of us who can't source cost-effective broadband services, but understandable, nonetheless). But that's not the problem.
Sadly, it's quite simply a problem of communication. And I'm not alone in this assertion. Increasingly, it seems, image is taking over from substance as the number one factor in website design, and companies are neglecting to tell us exactly what it is that they do.
This may be a bit of a laugh to some, but in cold hard terms it translates into lost sales. Countless Electronicstalk readers bear this out, and come back to us to help them out. And all we can do is suggest an alternative source.
But who are the worst offenders (and who is getting it right)? Send us your nominations, and we'll confront the worst offenders head on (and give praise where it's due). Just let us know your favourite (and least favourite) sites, and we'll hand out the brickbats and bouquets.
I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. We currently have thousands of engineers and other industry professionals on the circulation, so you're in good company.
In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can. But you don't need web access! All the full stories behind the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below. In the meantime, if you've got any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best wishes
Laurence Marchini, Editor

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. Fewer errors for high-density SRAM replacement
Ramtron International subsidiary Enhanced Memory Systems is shipping samples and preproduction quantities of its 72Mbit no bus latency (NoBL) burst enhanced SRAM (ESRAM). The new 72Mbit NoBL ESRAM, which uses Enhanced's proprietary one-transistor enhanced SRAM (ESRAM) architecture, is the highest-density SRAM replacement product available. The NoBL burst ESRAM provides a significant reduction in soft errors due to its high-capacitance trench capacitor and unique one-transistor SRAM architecture. SRAM users can now enjoy the speed and performance of SRAM in leading-edge densities without the reliability concerns associated with high-density conventional SRAMs.

2. Further functions for client side telephony
Spirit has developed a set of memory-efficient software addons for the Texas Instruments C54CST client side telephony chip, extending the functionality of the device's embedded firmware. The new addon algorithms include 1200bit/s vocoder, G.729AB, G3 fax data pump, G.723.1, and FoIP, all available for licensing in the form of object code for the C54CST chip.

3. Debugger gets to the root of embedded memories
TurboDebug-SoC/Memory from SynTest Technologies reduces the cost of test and debug for SoCs with large BISTed embedded memories. TurboDebug-SoC/Memory debugs and diagnoses failures on large embedded memories. It tests and debugs BISTed embedded SRAM/ROM memory on ASICs/SoCs. It enables users to detect memory failures down to the bit level. The testing and diagnosis is easy to perform using pull-down menus.

4. Thermal interface simplifies heatsink removal
Thermflow T766 phase-change material from Chomerics provides a low thermal resistance interface between hot components and heatsinks. Typical applications are found in thermal modules in laptop computers and between microprocessors and heatsinks in PCs. The material, which has a thermal impedance of 0.04Cin2/W, consists of a tacky, electrically nonconductive phase-change film coated onto one side of a highly conformable metal foil. This construction enables easy removal of heatsinks for rework with no residue being left on component surfaces.

5. Flash memory is optimised for Bluetooth
Cambridge Silicon Radio (CSR) and Fujitsu are working together to develop Flash memory for Bluetooth requirements. As part of the agreement, Fujitsu has created 3.0V, 4 and 8Mbit Flash memory optimised for CSR, available in FBGA, CSP and TSOP packaging. Fujitsu will also create 1.8V 4 and 8Mbit Flash memory for CSR. The devices, which are available now, will be sold through CSR channels bundled with CSR BlueCore solutions, easing the ordering process for CSR customers. The devices will also be sold by Fujitsu.

7. Adapter puts I2C in high-speed control
The latest I2C bus host adapter from Micro Computer Control Corp (MCC) provides a 4 to 100 times performance increase over earlier versions. The iPort/AFM (ASCII Fast Mode) host adapter brings new levels of performance to development, test, and embedded systems that require an I2C bus coprocessor. By implementing the new adapter with a high-speed processor, larger memory buffers, and highly optimised firmware, users recognise performance enhancements.

8. X-ray systems boost reliability analysis
The Reliability Analysis Laboratory has expanded its electronic component analysis services to include more detailed investigations in the areas of materials characterisation, nondestructive evaluation and test (NDE/NDT), and surface analysis of microprocessors, discrete components, and PCBs and assemblies. The addition of a new real-time X-ray system allows the RAL to non-destructively test a wider variety of miniature parts. Using the system, microelectronic components can be magnified to 200x, allowing for more detailed detection of faults in soldered leads, voids in substrates and die attaches, cracks in ceramics, and placement of internal components.
