Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:
"What's a holiday?". That was the almost universal response to last week's Editorial on the inevitable business slow-down brought about by the Northern Hemisphere summer season.
Some things, it seems never change: while sales and marketing folk see this time of year as a quiet period, the closest most engineers get to a break is a quicker commute to work on the quieter roads. Worse, as one correspondent put it: "The closest we get to a summer holiday is when our company takes a summer pension contribution break!".
The lesson, of course, comes from history. As one of our US readers reminded me, the whole thing stems from schools taking a long summer break (or "vacation") so that the children could help with farm work up to and including the harvest season.
Fortunately, child labour laws have improved over the years. Surely engineers' conditions must improve soon.
Meanwhile, if anyone needs me, I'll be taking a vacation in the garden.
I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. We currently have almost 8000 engineers and other industry professionals on the circulation, so you're in good company.
In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can. But you don't need web access! All the full stories behind the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below. In the meantime, if you've got any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best wishes

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. DSP SoCs feature A/D convertors and Flash
Two new devices from Texas instruments combine high-performance DSP cores with high-precision analogue functions and Flash memory. The new mixed-signal 32bit DSPs, which offer 150MIPS, a single cycle 32 x 32bit MAC capability, up to a 256Kbyte of on-chip Flash memory and an on-chip 12bit ADC, make tangible TI's promised technology of late last year. The TMS320F2810 and TMS320F2812 are based on the C/C++ efficient 32bit TMS320C28x DSP core and are supported by a virtual floating-point math library that significantly eases the development of a multitude of applications.

2. Simulator adds Spice to high-speed interconnects
IFS Pro is a software package specifically developed for design engineers with high speed analogue simulation requirements involved in PCB, cable, connector, VLSI, and related interconnect media design. As datarates escalate beyond 1Gbit/s, the microwave frequency domain characteristics of the interconnect system become increasingly important. The traditional microwave frequency dependent "port" measurements are scattering or S parameters, impedance or Z parameters, and transmission or T and ABCD parameters. IFS Pro simulates all these parameters quickly and accurately prior to prototyping.

3. FPGAs hit the performance accelerator
Actel reckons its Axcelerator family comprises the industry's FPGA solutions. Based on a 0.15-micron, seven-layer metal antifuse process, the Axcelerator family, with devices ranging in density from 125,000 to 2-million system gates, will achieve the highest internal performance in the industry, delivering over 500MHz operation and up to 100% resource usage. Until recently, the speed of the internal logic core of most FPGAs has kept up with system performance. However, with performance requirements for communications systems increasing dramatically, FPGAs are often unable to process data through the chip at wireline speeds, forcing the use of heavy pipelining and redundant logic to achieve the required system throughput.

4. PC-based package runs full set of automotive tests
Pico Technology has launched an automotive diagnostics package that enables measurements including: starter current; ignition, injector and ABS signals; and rotary sensor outputs. The package comprises a powerful, yet low-cost, PC-based oscilloscope, current clamp, secondary ignition pickup and a range of test clips, leads and probes.

5. Split design aids acquisition resolution
The DAQ-2010 is a multifunction card combining four channels of simultaneous 2MHz A/D and two channels of 1MHz D/A conversion. The DAQ-2010 is the first member of the DAQ-2000 series from Adlink Technology, using a novel carrier/daughter design allowing most advanced functions to integrate into a half-size PCI card while providing an easy migration path from PCIbus to PXI/CompactPCI bus.

6. Sensors shrink to flip-chip packages
Heraeus Sensor-Nite has developed a novel range of low-cost high-accuracy temperature sensors in SMD flip-chip packages. The sensors have a near-linear output and are suitable for use in the range -50 to +250C. They are highly resistant to vibration and shock and are suitable for use in most temperature-measurement or temperature-compensation applications.

7. Hardware hits the embedded industrial target
The xPC TargetBox is an industrial PC hardware system that complements The MathWorks' model-based design solution to meet the critical need for rapid control prototyping for embedded systems development. xPC TargetBox removes the burden of selecting and assembling PC hardware and provides designers a convenient, real-time testing system that for the first time offers a ruggedised, high-performance, desktop prototyping capability for designers of embedded systems.

8. Chokes take the rise out of inverter waveforms
The Schaffner RWK 305 Series of dv/dt chokes offers designers and operators reliable and cost-effective motor protection. The chokes are manufactured with an open-frame design, using vacuum impregnation to minimise humming. They are built with UL-rated materials and offer a variety of off-the-shelf ratings which can be readily adjusted to meet customer-specific requirements. The innovative design of the RWK 305 Series ensures a longer, more reliable motor life.

9. Production-programmed ROMs boost development time
Oki Electric has unveiled two 128Mbit P2ROM (production-programmed ROM) products: the MR27V12800J and the MR27T12800J. The newly developed large-capacity P2ROMs are based upon a 0.18um design rule, and guarantee 70ns random access speed, the fastest in its category. Applications include electronic dictionaries, PDAs, mobile games, educational equipment, sound sources, and MP3 data.
