Laurence Marchini, Editor, writes:

It's almost as if somebody flicked a switch. The good old "summer silly season" is upon us.

Allow me to explain this strange phenomenon for the benefit of the uninitiated (and particularly for the benefit of our Southern Hemisphere readers who, by now, have quite forgotten what summer is in any case).

The logic is lost in the dim and distant past, when somebody of influence decreed that the summer was a holiday season. This of course meant that journalists (who we should not forget are also members of the general public) should be allowed to take long summer holidays.

Now, in some cases it was difficult to tell whether the journalists were on holiday or not. (In fact it is rumoured that the famous recurring "Phew what a scorcher!" headline was only invented as a code to signify that the journalists were indeed on holiday.)

But in the electronics sector it was easy to tell. Monthly magazines would amalgamate two months into one half-size issue and weeklies would drop issues at random between mid June and the start of the September exhibition season.

All this was easy to justify: electronics engineers are members of the general public too. They will all take long summer holidays, won't they? So there's little point in publishing so many words.

The marketing profession liked this idea and joined in the game.

Clearly, with pages being published, there was no point in launching products which might be missed. And then, there was no point in advertising. (Which, not surprisingly, only served to justify the publishers' decision to cut back on issues.)

The marketing profession are all members of the general public, and like to take long summer holidays.

(… all of which serves to explain why Electronicstalk has only featured half the new stories in the past week it did the week before. Maybe I ought to go to the beach… I have a feeling I'll be very busy in September!)

However, as in the real world engineers do not take long summer holidays, I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. We have thousands of engineers and other industry professionals on the circulation, so you're in good company.

In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a look if you can. But you don't need web access! All the full stories behind the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below. In the meantime, if you've got any suggestions as to how we might make the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best wishes

OUR TOP TEN NEW PRODUCTS SELECTION
=======================================================
1. Graphical tool speeds secure RTOS applications

A powerful system design tool from Green Hills Software speeds the development of high-availability embedded applications that use multiple virtual address spaces to simplify debugging and to enhance safety, security and testability. Known as Integrate, the new tool allows developers to more easily take advantage of the virtual address spaces and secure interprocess communication channels offered by the company's Integrity RTOS. Integrate's graphical front-end makes it easy for system designers to configure the system's kernel and address spaces, tasks, semaphores, connections, clocks, and other objects.

3. Service firms up on soft IP cores

Synopsys Professional Services is offering a new design service which will enable licensees of IP cores from ARM to realise the advantages of "soft" IP and the ease of adopting new, customer-preferred silicon technology combined with the performance, predictability and time-to-market benefits of "hard" IP. The new core-hardening service addresses the key implementation stages of hardening an ARM microprocessor core described at the "soft" register-transfer-level (RTL) into a manufacturable GDSII description for the target silicon process technology and end-user application.
